Advantages: great music
Disadvantages: ?
Pink Floyd collection of great dance songs.
I like lots of different kinds of music. Pink Floyd is a band that I have liked from when I was young. I have a lot of their records on Vinyl. When I saw a cd entitled a collection of great dance tunes I could not resist it.
This C D contains a few songs from when I first listened to Pink Floyd at the age of 16/17 in 1971, up to songs produced in 1981.
When I was a young teenager I did not listen to pop music much preferring to listen to underground music, I guess I was being a bit snobby I wanted to be different, not one of the sheep.
I listened to the old grey whistle test rather than top of the pops. I wore long skirts, went shoeless (I hate wearing shoes) had long hair and preferred my men to have long hair.
I did not/ do not take drugs but liked the idea of freedom, love and peace the ideals of hippy life living and working in a community. I listened to pink Floyd, and was a happy carefree young thing.
I met the boy of my dreams through the music paper SOUNDS in 72, He liked the music I liked, so I guess Pink Floyd are a band playing music of my love and experiences as a youth, their music still holds magic for me.
This CD contains, 6 tracks.
1/ “one of these days” from the record Meddle produced in 1971.
Wind howling and quavering, notes into heavy beat rising and falling notes. The music insistent that I listen too it and a deep voice says
One of these days I am going to tear you into little pieces.
(I cant sit still listening to this; my heads a tapping in time my hands stabbing the air)
The music continues with a beat and then the track ends with the wailing winds we go straight in to the next track
2/ Money from dark side of the moon produced 1981.
This track starts with the sound of a cash register, coins ratting.
Money has a good even steady beat. This is one of the classics pink Floyd will be remembered for.
Money its a crime share it fairly but dont take a slice of my pie
“Money so they say is the root of all evil today.
A few whispered conversations and at the end I don’t know I was drunk at the time is said.
3/ Sheep from animals produced 1977
Baaaaaaa baaaaaa the sound of sheep and is joined by the sound of birds twittering. Then a beat comes in and delicate sounds echoing around the beat becomes more insisrant then the singing breaks in.
Harmlessly passing your time in the grassland
Only dimly aware of certain unease in the air.
My head is nodding, my body wants to move. The music comes down a few notes and some sounds a steady beat then it rises again.(I want to dance around the room). Then the music quietens to the sound of sheep in the hills there are words singing, a version of
the lord is my shepherd
He maketh me to hang on hooks in high places
He converteth me into lamb cutlets
Heard the news the dogs dead you better stay at home. and do as you as you are told, get out of the road if you want to grow old , finishing with sheep baaing birds twittering and music goes straight in to a long note.
4/shine on you crazy diamond from wish you were here produced 1975 the year I was married.
Long notes wish with smaller notes falling on them, like drops of rain falling on a puddle, a few more long notes then the music develops a heavier beat.
Remember when you were you were young
You shone like the sun.
This is a song to listen to. Oh yes I remember those days
Shine on you crazy diamond,
You reached for the secret to soon
You reached for the moon
Shine on you crazy diamond.
5/ wish you were here produced 1975 from the album wish you were here,
Wish you were here begins after the last tracks made me wonder what I had done with my life and where my dreams were.
A few single guitar notes
So you think you could tell heaven from hell (I did in those days)
Then more guitar riffs a little bit of a beat
I wish, just wish you were here,
We are just two lost souls, swimming in a fish bowl year after year
The music continues with a steady beat and finishes with a sound like wind
6/“Another brick in the wall” produced1979 from the album the wall
We don’t need no education, we dont need no thought control
Teacher leave those kids, alone,
All in all its just another brick in the wall
Lots of heavy even beat.
There is a joint chorus from (a group of kids?)
I think most of you will have heard this or at least snatches of it with the education system in the mess it is now. Although the words are really about how the teachers (establishment) try to control our lives.
If you dont eat your meat you cant has any pudding
This CD finishes with this track.
I think this CD holds a fair selection of pink Floyds work from over the years most of these songs are danceable to. I certainly enjoyed listening to it today. Thanks for reading Mary

- 02/02/05 This is one of your finest reviews, Mary! I like it because you're really sharing your personal experience with the music, so I feel like I'm experiencing it with you. Great also, how you describe the individual tracks. ... I'm thinking of buying a Pink Floyd CD. Would this one be a good starter for a 'Pink Floyd Beginner'? Or would you recommend a different one?
