I never really liked Queen. Oh yes, I knew all the hits and even loved some of them - 'Bohemian Rhapsody' reminding me of christmas parties 'round at the local Labour club and 'Killer Queen' bringing back those heady days when video recorders first hit the market (my father had gotten hold of a 'pirated' tape with ELO's 1978 concert at Wembley, Motorhead's 'No Sleep 'til Hammersmith' gig and Queen's greatest hits). Me and my brother sat and watched the tape until not even the tracking control had any effect on the picture and then, as the sound started to act up, we would skip over the wire on the remote(?) control to pass the time until the old man sorted out some ...

'Bohemian Rhapsody'... It was an amazing piece of rock history, a stunning tour de force, epic in intention and stunning in execution, with a slow, soft beginning, with Freddie Mercury's piano and voice, built through a breathtaking mini opera of a middle section with overdubbed vocals to a grinding heavy metal section before calming down to the breathy "Any way the wind blows...." conclusion. I would argue that never before had a song attempted what Queen had pulled off here - a musical masterpiece and one that achieved outstanding chart success with an unprecedented nine weeks at the top of the charts. Queen - the music I was brought up on. As a 7 year old, Freddie Mercury was my greatest hero, in my opinion, he was the only man who could sing, as was Roger Taylor the only man who could play drums properly, No one could beat John Deacon (or his Hilda Ogden T-Shirt) on the base guitar, and no one was as electrifying as Brian May on the good old electric guitar.
