Advantages: Robbie was great

Disadvantages: Crowd wasn't so great, Bad Seats

I count myself very lucky to have got tickets to see Robbie in Landsdown Road on Friday the 6th of July, 2001, I know how many people would give various vital body organs to be able to attend a Robbie Concert in Ireland - memories of Slane are still prevalent in many Robbie Fan's minds. We went early to get tickets on the day that they came out, but well, arriving at 9.05 ensured that we would be sitting in row ZZ with the whole standing area being sold out.

Needless to say, we were also too late to get any accommodation in Dublin, so had to make do with the 4 hour journey down on the bus.

When we arrived, it was all very exciting, until we passed the beer tents and saw all the fights - not something that I am particularly accustomed to seeing, maybe I'm naïve. I was also totally shocked at the price of the merchandise - I had already bought a Robbie T-shirt online, from his official site for £15, I saw the same one at the concert for £30!!!

As we found our seats we realised that we weren't going to see much, but hey, we were there for the music, so I didn't mind too much!

The first support band was ABC - a small man in white jumped around the stage - thank goodness for the video screens is all I can say. No one was too impressed by them, but the Dublin crowd as always was very gracious, trying to figure out the words and sing along.

The second support band was Toploader, who were brilliant, and had us all dancing around to "Dancing in the Moonlight", I really enjoyed them, but again, they looked like little ants with perms jumping around on stage!

During the intervals we were treated to little bits of video footage, including one of Robbie going around Dublin, posing as one of the many street sellers outside the stadium. This all helped provide a good atmosphere, along with the count down of Robbie coming onstage. At one point we were threatened that Robbie was being replace
d by H from Steps, and while I was wetting myself laughing it appeared that a number of the jokes had gone over the heads of many of the people sitting around me.

Fat Bottomed Girls by Queen was the song that Robbie chose to make his entrance to, very apt as his latest single is "We are the Champions", also by Queen.

Sporting a new hair style, it was difficult to figure out which one was Robbie to start off - then we realised that he was the one with the big white stripe down his hair - looked a little bit like someone had been remarking the white lines on the road.... hehe... Despite his umm, interesting hair style, Robbie was brilliant.

Robbie opened the show with "Let me Entertain You", to a pretty much delighted me, obviously many of those standing enjoyed it too, but those that sat around me weren't all that interested.

Robbie played a cracking show, singing "It's a beautiful Day" by U2, obviously going down well with the Irish crowd, constant references to Slane, and the occassional Jibe at Madonna, saying that we were having a better time than anyone at her concerts!

Robbie amused those people who absolutely hated Take That, with his side spliting rendition of Back For Good. Those fans who have the "Angels" single will know it as the second song that was played at one of his Manchester gigs. Unfortunately those who were big Take That fans were not so impressed, but that just made it even funnier - Good on ya Robbie!

We were treated to the brilliant Road to Mandalay, which had us all DumDumDumming for the rest of the night, and the wonderful "Angels" along with "She's the one", "Millenium", "Kids", his latest single and the one and only "Rock DJ".

The night ended, as it began, with a little bit of Queen, and an amazing version of "We are the Champions".

So off we headed, h
ome, on a bus, for four hours, vowing that next time we would camp out for tickets, and make sure that we were beside some interesting people. Robbie played great, there is no doubt about that - he will always be one of the most entertaining men, but those around us were so uninterested and lifeless, that they may as well have not have been there at all. I always say that a crowd helps make a concert great, well Robbie made it good, a different crowd might have made it brilliant.
