Advantages: be what you want, do what you want...

Disadvantages: you'll probably still become a stereotype...

They started the whole punk thing in the lateish 70's, and their music still stands above a that of the majority of the bands around today.
Their style has influenced most of the punk bands that have recently become so popular, for example Green Day and The Offspring.
They also were the first artists not to censor their lyrics. They had nothing against going completely over the top, and didn't seen concerned about who they offended.
I think that the main reason that punk became so revolutionary was the music scene had become dominated by a few big names. I had a very long chat about punk with my maths teacher, and we came to the conclusion that the reason punk was so big was that everyone could get up and be a part of it, they didn't just have to sit and watch a few select people do it all.
Also, it was more about young people doing it for themselves, and being individuals. Punk gave so many people the chance to do things they'd never normally do.
The Sex Pistols broke all the rules and conventions, and started a revolutionary style which has given so much to the music industry as we know it.

ok ok ok, please forgive me mr. punkrock/general music historian... :P
they do deserve a certain amount of credit however. they did push punk out - yes, someone else would have done it if they didn't, but the point is - they did it, and they're always going to be remembered and given more attention for it, fair or not.

Maybe they started the punk movement, although they don't deserve all the credit, there are some realy good punk bands out there, for example the clash, and what about the unoticed ones, the anti nowhere league etc, the trouble with some people is that they think they know punk because they know the pistols, -bollox, punk is about an idea, a belief, a struggle to stand up for what you think, not just one band who happened to make it, but punk is not so much about the music, it's the message behind the songs, the music was simply there to publicise their opinions, and well done Sid Jonny, Steve... and the other one! it worked, you succeded, but you are not punk you are a part of it, yes you made it happen, but if you didn't, someone else would, the 70's music sceene was screaming for something like the pistol, right time and place is all I can put their sucess down to.
Dont get me wrong I like punk, but it doesn't end where it begins, there are bands as good as the pistols and it pisses me off when people act like they know it all when they know fuck all.
soory if I seemed blunt, or if i rambled, but those twats realy get my goat.
