Having reviewed Suede's 'Coming Up' and 'Head Music' on dooyoo, I thought I'd use this Suede section to take a look at their debut Album from 1993. In the early nineties they had a music subculture called 'shoegazing'. Ordinary looking singers would literally stare at their shoes as they sang rooted to the spot. They warbled obtuse lyrics about nothing in particular and while it was all very pleasant it wasn't what you would call exciting. An obscure band called Blur were trying to be The Stone Roses. The real Stone Roses had been undone by drugs and laziness and the 'baggy' scene they spawned had fizzled out without them. It was time for someone ... Read the complete review

Suede were my first band. Okay not mine personally (no I'm not Bernard Butler in disguise honest, or if I am it's a bloody good disguise!), but the first band I really connected with and became an obsessional fan of. Now there's something you shouldn't admit too, but hey I was 14! To be honest in my early teen years I wasn?t that excited by music (hard to believe as it may be now), I'd been through the usual childhood pop phase, but to be honest by musical taste such as it was still largely defined by my parent's record collection. It was Suede that changed all that for me, right from the moment I heard 'The Drowners' (on a mix tape ... Read the complete review

It’s now a decade since svelte Brit Pop pioneers Suede crashed into the British music scene and yet their self-titled debut album sounds as fresh and exciting as it did on its release. The now defunct Melody Maker named Suede as the Best Band in Britain on the basis of their live performances and before they had even released their debut single, The Drowners, which served up an intoxicating cocktail of domestic nonchalance, pouting boredom and lazy pleas for change. The excitement and hype created a stir that saw fey front man Brett Anderson and his band hailed as the latest musical saviours. When their 'Suede' was finally released in 1993 it was eagerly ... Suede are definately one of the most important bands of the 1990s, above all, because it is said that their debut album launched the 'britpop' movement. However, it would be unfair to limit Suede to britpop as their music is much more far reaching than that. Also, nowadays, I see them as more of a pop band than a rock band as their sound is quite commercial and lead parts are split equally between guitar and keyboards, often with some orchestral backing. Brett Anderson is the groups singer and lyricist, and whilst his lyrics can sometimes be seen as faintly ridiculous due to his over-use of the words 'she', 'diesel', 'gasoline', ... From the minute Suede hit the headlines in the early 90's, it was clear that they were a very special band with substance to equal the hype being placed on their then young shoulders. With their debut album, simply title "Suede", becoming the fastest selling debut album in history Suede were fast becoming the biggest band in Britain. Then, in 1993, disaster struck and Bernard Butler decided that he no longer wanted to be in the band. Butler left just before the release of the breath-taking second album "Dog Man Star". Many said that Suede would split after Butler's departure, Anderson had other ideas and recruited 2 young ... Read the complete review
