In a new rock 'n' roll world where bands like The Strokes and The White Stripes are ushering a new wave of 60s and 70s garage rock aggression it only makes sense that those individuals eating up this direly needed return to roots music expand their search to the punk rock edge of the same era from which these other bands have been extrapolated. The Hives are damn cool - of that there can be no doubt! With their truly wacky names (Dr. Matt Destruction and so on) and mad take on a 1970s mod image they are genuinely original in a world of vapid and mass-produced pop rubbish. Hailing from rural Sweeden and influenced (so Jools Holland claims) by 70s punk acts such as Iggy Pop they seem to be happily carving out their own corner of the punk rock/indie scene - and not simply due to their unforgettable image. Their tunes are a million miles away from certain morose indie acts and from pure angry punk which simply screams.
