Advantages: Great music to grow up listening to
Disadvantages: The death of 3 original members :(
I have grew up listening to punk music as both my parents were punks and I was quite proud of them. My dad is still into this type of music but my mum drifted after my parents divorced. I grew up listening to The Ramones daily. It was a regular sound in our house hold and I loved it. I think buy the age of about 7 I could name titles from any Ramones album the was mentioned. I still now revisit the Ramones old albums and relive my childhood days.
The Ramones formed in 1974. This actually proved that even though The Sex Pistols claim that they were the first punk band in 1977. It was actually The Ramones who haf already been going for 3 years. The Ramones were famous for their leather jackets and tight black jeans and converse trainers. The lead singer Joey looked like a bean pole. He seemed to always wear glasses and had long wavy hair. The Ramones never really realsed a song over 2 and half minuites long. Their famous 1, 2, 3,4 was loved by all. Fans also chanted "gabba babba hey" when they saw them live. If you were ever lucky enough to see them live, which I wasn't as I'm too young. You would have got a real treat. The Ramones are famous for never taking breaks after each song and running through to the next one with ease. I think my dad told me that they can easily fit 25+ songs into one set as they were so fast. They really must have been exhausted afterwards but they left fans amazed and gagging for more.
The original line up where as follows:-
* Joey Ramone - lead vocals and drums
* Johnny Ramone - guitar
* Dee Dee Ramone - bass
In late 1974 the band welcomed Tommy Ramone who then took over and played drums. The band did not release their debut album until 1976 which was self titled. This alum was not a susses at all in the Uk until they played a concert in London on July 4, 1976. The Ramones then started to be noticed. Some of their best songs from that album were "Blitzkrieg bop" and "I wanna be your boyfriend" Some of the bands that were influenced by The Ramones were The clash, The sex pistols and the Dammed. It was in 1977 when the massive punk scene came into place and it was cool to be a punk.
Tommy was replaced by Marky in 1978 and the band had various other drummers throughout their career. One being CJ Ramone.
The band never really released massive hits and their most popular release was the cover "baby I love you" which reached number 8 in the charts. My favourite Ramones song is either "Rock away Beach" or "Sheena is a punk rocker". My dad actually wanted to call me Sheena but my mum though I would get picked on.
The Ramones have always been an influential band and bands like Green day, The undertones, The buzz cocks, the offspring etc are all happy to state that they were influenced by Joey and his tribe. The Ramones also have a tribute album (Gabba gabba hey- a tribute to the ramones) dedicated to them. Some of the bands that appear on this are kiss, Red hot chilli peppers, Metalica, Green Day and U2. The Ramones have also made an appearance on The Simpsons singing a Happy Birthday song to Mr Burns.
The Ramones released the following albums :-
* Ramones in 1976
* Leave home, Rocket to Russia in 1977
* Road to ruin in 1978
* End of the century in 1980
* Pleasant dreams in 1981
* Subterranean Jungle in 1983
* Too tough to die in 1984
* Animal boy in 1986
*Halfway to sanity in 1987
* Brain Drain in 1989
* Mondo Bizarro in 1992
* Acid eaters in 1999 and
* Adios amigos in 1995
One of my favourite films of all time is "Rock and roll high school" Its about a teenage rebel who loves the Ramones. The Ramones make an appearance in the film which is great.
The Ramones split after their final show was on August 6, 1996. This was a big disappointment for all fans but luckily the members did release solo albums and still toured separately.
The world was saddened by the death of Joey Ramone on April 15th 2001 aged 50. I couldn't really believe that he had died. He was such an inspiration to everyone and he will always be missed. After his death his solo album was released "don't worry about me" which included the cover song "what a wonderful world" I was truly touched by this album and it was nothing at all like other Ramones releases. Soon after Joey's death Dee Dee was found dead in his home on 5th June 2002 and then Johnny Ramone on September 15th 2004.
I still cant believe that 3 original members died within 3 years of each other. The Ramones will always be remembered and their music will live on. I don't think that we would have the half decent music we have today if it wasn't for The Ramones.
