I fell into Third Eye Blind's music when I received their self-titled debut as a random through an ordering company I was signed up with. Too lazy to go to the post office and mail the thing back to them, I ripped it open and decided to give it a try. And thus, an obsession was born. "Third Eye Blind" is not your typical blend of music. The rich voice of Stephen Jenkin's will keep you hooked with every charged track through this brilliant debut. The band released an amazing four singles off this album: "Semi-Charmed Life", a modern ballad of sex and drugs and world-famous party song; a tale of friends and suicide in "Jumper"; the grad-celebration "Graduate"; and "How's It Gonna Be?", a tale of strained friendship and loyalty that gained fame in the soundtrack for "Can't Hardly Wait". Also featured on this stunning disc are the songs "Motorcycle Drive By" and "God of Wine", ending tracks with such substance and power that they can bring tears to your eyes. The next offering with the band, "Blue", was a slight disappointment. They moved from their upbeat, pop-rock roots to a more Aerosmith-esque style of what I like to call "scream-rock". There are a few great tracks, such as the first single "Anything" and the wordy "Wounded", and perhaps even the high-pitched stumblers like "10 Days Late" and "Never Let You Go" (which was featured on one of the famous NOW compilation CDs), but in all actuality the album suffers from general lack of creativity. There is a wonderful redeemer in the acoustic lullabye-worthy "Slow Motion", but it's very clear that "Blue" suffers from simply a lack of effort and inspiration. For those hardcore fans out there, you may also be able to find the near-impossible-to-get "Jumper" single, which features the song &quo
t;Jumper" in it's radio edit, a remix of "Graduate", and the Jumper video for those of you with computers (which is mostly everybody nowadays anyway). And on top of that, a trivia bit for you all: Stephen Jenkin's appears vocally on the bonus track of Limp Bizkit's "Chocolate Starfish and the Hot Dog Flavored Water", speaking with Fred Durst on a phone call. He actually sings a line of "London" - "I don't wanna go to London" - from his London hotel room during a European tour. Just thought you might want to know that. All in all, Third Eye Blind is an incredibly talented group. Even in their progression to a heavier rock base, they maintained their work as deserving of a strong fan base.
