That was the question I asked when I first heard Tool, the auditory angle is one of an infinant number of facets that make up Tool. Opiate gave a somewhat misleading introduction to who Tool actually are. ON Undertow we get a glimpse of the creative genius that exists within each member and by the time Aenima was released it became obvious that Tool didn't deal in alterni-rock by numbers, this is a band that combines religion and philosophy with science. Combining art and mathematics, this is a band who plan to stretch their audience, make them think about what they are listening to. With the release of Lateralus the entire picture becomes clear. Many lazy reviewers have made comments relating to Led Zep due to the mysticism in the imagery, and Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon due to how experimental this album is and the and the vast changes in style and tempo within it. Personally I feel that Lateralus deserves to go down in history as one of the great albums, the sound is so immense and negative at times it becomes almost claustrophobic (Ticks & Leeches provides a good example of this) and at other times it can be the most relaxing beautiful piece of music in the world (Disposition or Parabol). Lateralus changed my perspective on what music should sound like and quite possibly what music actually is.
