Weird Al - Videos

Advantages: 21 Music Videos on one DVD.

Disadvantages: Too much happening at once you have to watch them many times to spot all the jokes.

"Weird Al" showing how Diverse he can be.

Not only are "Weird Al"s songs very funny be warned the music videos just add to the weirdness with Al going through many different looks/outfits/styles/settings. One thing you learn is that when you are watching the videos try and keep an eye on what is happening in the background as well as the foreground you may miss something. This DVD has the music videos he has done (not including "The Saga Begins" and "It's All About The Pentiums" from his most recent album "Running With Scissors").

Ok, now for the run down:

RICKY parody of "Mickey" by Tony Basil - As well as being Al's music video debut, this was arguably the first comedy video ever shown on MTV. Based on the TV show 'I Love Lucy' it features the talented voice-over actress Tress MacNeille(The Simpsons and Animaniacs) plays Lucy and Al shaves of his moustache and puts all his hair into a short wig making him look like Ricky Ricardo. Al also makes a brief appearance with hair flying and accordion in hand. (shot 4/83)

I LOVE ROCKY ROAD parody of "I Love Rock 'n' Roll" by Joan Jett and the Blackhearts - This tribute to Al's favourite ice cream flavour was shot in a defunct restaurant besides a deserted air strip in Agua Dulce, California. "Musical Mike" Kiefer is seen showcasing his "musical hands". Al can't seem to resist getting his accordion into this video. (shot 6/83)

EAT IT parody of "Beat It" by Michael Jackson - Al's Grammy Award-winning parody "Eat It" was an immediate international success, thanks largely to this tremendously popular video. Choreographer Vince Patterson, who played a gang leader in the original Michael Jackson clip, reprises his role here. (shot 2/84)

I LOST ON JEOPARDY parody of "Jeopardy" by the Greg Kihn band - A nostalgic trib
ute to the old 'Jeopardy' game show, the video features cameos by the original host Art Fleming, original show announcer Don Pardo, Al's mentor Dr. Demento, Al's real parents and Greg Kihn himself makes an appearance. (shot 5/84)

THIS IS THE LIFE - This 1930's-flavored original was the theme song for the 1930's gangster spoof 'Johnny Dangerously', starring Michael Keaton and Danny DeVito. The video is punctuated with scenes from the film. (shot 11/84)

LIKE A SURGEON parody of "Like a Virgin" by Madonna - Filmed in a recently out of business hospital. This and the next two were filmed as part of a home video and television special called 'The Compleat Al' (shot 5/58)

ONE MORE MINUTE - This original sick and twisted Elvis-like doo-wop love song has become a perennial favourite relationship-impaired. Al's long time band members (Jim West, Steve Jay and Jon "Bermuda" Schwartz) supply the cheesy choreography. Watch for Al ripping up a picture of the woman who inspired this song. (shot 5/85)

DARE TO BE STUPID - Although this is an Al original composition, "Dare To Be Stupid" is obviously a homage to the group DEVO, as well as, of course, Al's motto in life. (shot 5/85)

LIVING WITH A HERNIA parody of "Living In America" by James Brown - This was shot on the very same stage (Bally's Hotel, Las Vegas) where the Godfather of Soul shot his scenes for Rocky IV. (shot 10/86)

CHRISTMAS AT GROUND ZERO - A cheery Phil Spectre-inspired original about Armageddon coming at Christmas. Al only appears at the end on the video the rest is filled with short clips of happy Christmas scenes and disaster/bomb testing. Broadcasters refused to show this as they somehow decided that it was a tad morbid to play a song about nuclear annihilation during the holidays. (shot 11/86)

FAT parody of "Bad" by Michael Jackson - "WOO!&
quot; This look of Al's is quite disconcerting with a three hour make-up job each day of filming to make him look fat. This Grammy Award-winning video is shot on the Culver City soundstage on a subway set generously donated Michael Jackson. This is by far my personal favourite video with jokes galore and fat Al dancing is a funny sight by itself. (shot 3/88)

MONEY FOR NOTHING/BEVERLY HILLBILLIES a Parody of "Money For Nothing" By Dire Straits - The centrepiece of Al's 1989 feature film "UHF," this video features computer animation of master editor Rick Morris. Band member Jim West is seen playing the guitar in the video, but Dire Straits' own Mark Knopfler recorded the actual track. (shot 1/89)

UHF - The video for this original theme song from Al's movie was perhaps his most ambitious to date. Between clips from the film (which also features Michael Richards, Fran Drescher and Victoria Jackson), Al and his band parody (in order):Guns 'n' Roses, George Michael, Robert Palmer, Prince, Talking Heads, Peter Gabriel, ZZ Top, Billy Idol, The Beatles INXS and Randy Newman. (shot 6/89)

SMELLS LIKE NIVARNA parody of "Smells Like Teen Spirit" by Nirvana - Rolling Stone put this on their list of the Top 100 Videos Of All Time, Spy Magazine dubbed it Video Of The Year, and Al was nominated for Best Male Performance at the MTV Video Music Awards. Filmed on the same soundstage as the original Nirvana clip, this video used the same janitor and many of the same extras. Dick Van Patten also turns in a stellar performance. There are a lot more jokes thrown in as well. (shot 2/92)

YOU DON'T LOVE ME ANYMORE - Although this song is another Al original, the video was closely modelled after "More Than Words" by Extreme. It was filmed on the famous Charlie Chaplain soundstage in Los Angeles. "Weird Al"s romantic ballad is a nice song complete with mad cap jokes all aro
und and features Robert Goulet getting fake blood on his nice, clean tux. (shot 6/92)

JURASSIC PARK parody of "MacArthur Park" by Richard Harris - It took teams of animators in Reseda, California and Portland Oregon just under two months working round the clock to produce this amazing Steven Spielberg-approved tribute to his megahit dino-movie. This animated video went on to nominated for a Grammy and is still used in animation festivals around the world. I do much prefer the video to the song. Sorry Al. (produced 8-10/93)

BEDROCK ANTHEM a parody of "Under the Bridge" & "Give It Away" by Red Hot Chili Peppers - This video was shot on the exact same patch (about two hours outside of L.A.) as the original. This Flintstones inspired song has Al jumping around dressed as a caveman. The Bee Girl from the Blind Melon videos makes an appearance, as does Al's Aunt Dot and, once again. Dick Van Patten. (shot 10/93)

HEADLINE NEWS parody of "Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm" by Crash Test Dummies - Al straightens his curly locks hair for this one. Shot in a ice rink in Paramount, California and a elementary school in Pasadena he sings about three of the most over exposed news stories of the time to the tunr of the 1994's most hummable hit. The video is as always filled with many visual gags including Al falling backward off a chair (no worry he is fine). Look out for comedienne Judy Tenuta and "The Peoples Court's" Doug Llewelyn. (shot 8/94)

AMISH PARADISE parody of "Gangsta's Paradise" by Coolio - Al gets a beard. The inimitable Florence Henderson plays the Michelle Pfeiffer role in this tale of life on the mean streets of Lancaster, Pennsylvania. During one shot of this video "Weird Al" had to phonetically sing the lyrics backwards while walking backwards through a busy farmyard. (shot 2/96)

GUMP parody of "Lump" by The Presidents of the U
SA - He has gone bald! Yep, Al has got a bald rubber wig for this. This Forest Gump parody tells the complete story in just over two minutes. Andy Comeau plays the title character, while "laugh in"s Ruth Buzzi and pop icon Pat Boone appear in bench cameos. (shot 4/96)

SPY HARD a "Weird Al" original is the title song for Hollywood Pictures' action spoof "Spy Hard" starring Leslie Nielsen. Al wrote, directed and stared in this video. It's the complete movie opening sequence without the actual credits. (shot 4/96)

If you get the chance watch the videos they are the icing on the cake and really bring life into some of the strangest songs the music industry has ever seen.

Great opinion, I've seen a lot of these videos over launchcast but I'd love to see a higher quality version of them in the future, might have to buy a DVD with them in the future.
