f one uses the measure of chart success only Westlife are now one of the most successful bands ever in the history of British pop music. That fact probably makes everyone who hears it wish to scream. Undoubtedly Westlife fans will scream because they appear to do so at every mention of their name. The anti-Westlife grouping of which I am one scream at the thought of what a sad reflection this fact is on British music today.

I must justify why I dislike Westlife so much. It is that they are so asinine, dull, musically uninspiring, repetitive and visually boring. That boy-bands fill a market need is obvious but at least the early trailblazers of the genre like Take That had some measure of originality, were able to write material of some value and were visually entertaining. Westlife have now gone through 8 dull indistinguishable ballads in a row. I would perhaps forgive them a little if one of these ballads had a least a grain of soul or feeling but no this is candy floss - sweet, unsubstantial and ultimately as unsatisfying as spun sugar. This was perfectly illustrated by their version of the Temptations classic 'My Girl' which they managed to deliver without any feeling or soul.

They produce two types of video one where they stand about separately and then together mouthing their diatribe wearing white suits and one where they lip-sync their latest turgid song wearing black outfits. So similar are the videos I would defy that anyone but their most avid fan would be able to tell which song it was if they watched the video with the sound off. When watching without the sound their apparent attempts at moody posing looks ridiculous and for both the absence of sound and the high comedy effect I recommend watching Westlife videos in silence as one of the funniest things on TV.

I have nothing personal against the 5 lads who make up Westlife but I hope they soon will have made enough money to retire gracefully and raise a family. Sadly it is more likely they will slowly sink before being completely invisible. It will be difficult for radio stations in the future to keep playing their music because it has never had any value other than the currency of its popularity. Once that popularity goes and the next big thing replaces them they will be as marketable as Bros or Jason Orange. The worrying thing is how bad will the next band of non-threatening boys be.
