‘...the winner with 4.6 million votes is… Will!’

‘Yeeeesss!!! Yes! Yes! Yes!’ I jumped up from the sofa and ran to the phone which had just begun ringing, I answered the call with in place of ‘hello’, ‘AAARRRGGGHHH!!!’ It was my sister and we had been rooting for will ever since the day he stood up to Simon Cowell, that was when he was in the first fifty, and he wasn’t even standing up for himself really. He immediately came across as being a gentile, noble, character which was the reason why we were initially interested in him winning.

When Will had originally gone to the audition it was the fact that he took it all in his stride that appealed to me also, he was in no rush to perform for the judges being the last one to turn-up and it was obvious to me that although her loves performing and singing, it isn’t the be all and end all for him.
At this time he was a student also, so that comes across to me as a guy who is intelligent enough to not put his whole life on hold while chasing his dreams, instead he decides to try and figure out a career that may suit him and even though it may not exactly be the life he wanted, at least it will be something to fall back on if nothing ever comes of those dreams. Because lets face it, dreams like that are based on luck – being at the right place, at the right time, with the right people and getting that chance, it isn’t called a ‘Lucky break’ for nothing y’know!

Even from the tape of his first audition I could see a certain ‘something’ in him, I couldn’t, still can’t put my finger on it. Each time I have seen him sing and each time is the same, I feel ‘drawn’ into him, he has an amazing talent for making songs ‘his own’. He adds an undeniable ‘edge’ to any piece he is asked to do.

It really annoys me when I hear others go on about
how ‘Will just doesn’t have the whole package’ and ‘Gareth will be around much longer as he’s got the looks’. Do you people know what a pop idol even is?

First and foremost it is about this ‘magic’ that they have around them, they are able to appeal to a much wider audience and they manage to outlive ‘three minute perky little pop song’ stars. A pop-idol is someone who can grasp the attention of you and hold it. Will Young definitely does that and I’m sorry but the other bloke…er…what’s his name… Oh, Yeah…Gareth just doesn’t cut it for me.

Another major important thing about a pop idol is the ability to sing, and it’s not just about singing well but it’s about being able to project emotions in the songs you are singing. Will young can do this in every single song he sings, and the great thing is he doesn’t have to swish his head round in a very obvious biting motion to get across the word ‘Bite’ (Sorry Gareth, but it’s just too OTT), as it comes very naturally to him, he does it in a very subtle and sincere way as though he means every word of the song he’s singing.

Entertainment is crucially important when you want to be a pop-idol, you have to be seen to be enjoying the songs yourself, Will looks relaxed and has fun with the songs he sings and still they sound awesome. Poor little Gareth stands as stiff as a board trying desperately to hit his next note. He is too afraid of getting it wrong to get it right.

And as for all this rubbish about the ‘Looks’ issue, Anyone who thinks Will is not as good looking as Gareth needs an eye test. I mean, if your aged ten or under then fair enough, your bound to have a crush on young Gareth, but come on, if your twenty or over and you think Gareth ‘floats your boat’ then we need to lock up our sons! He looks like a little boy,
He is a little boy – He is still a teenager!!! Will is lovely looking with a smile to die for and he's a grown-up, so you won't feel guilty if you do get a bit of a crush on him!

I’d like to compare a few more Long-standing Pop idols so I can justify my opinion some more!!!

Michael Jackson – Probably the biggest pop idol ever,
Magic – Yes
Entertaining – Yes
Emotional – Yes
Unique – Yes
Drop Dead Gorgeous – No

Madonna – Probably the biggest female pop idol ever

Robbie Williams – Boy band member turned pop-idol

Drop Dead Gorgeous – For Girls

Well with the list above I’m sure you’re beginning to get my drift; Looks aren’t everything where a pop-idol is concerned.

I have c.d.’s at home that I lis
ten to over and over and I don’t even know what the person who sings them looks like. A pop-idol to me is about that magic I was talking about and if you don’t have that then I’m afraid it doesn’t matter haw great looking you are, you will never make the grade like supermodels Naomi Campbell, and Caprice and there feeble attempts at pop stardom. These girls may well have been able to hold a tune but they certainly couldn’t hold an audience.

So, Will if you ever come on the site and read this then good luck and My Family and I will be supporting you every step of the way!!!

And Gareth, I’m sorry if I sound harsh, you are a cute boy with a sweet voice, and I know it must be difficult with your stammer (Heres a tip by the way - sing all your interviews!) and I’m sure there’s a place in a boy band just around the corner for you!

*****UPDATE*****

Will Young steamed to number one yesterday (03/march/2002) with a record breaking debut single selling more than 1.1 million copies.

The double A-sided single 'Anything is possible/Evergreen' has gained a place in the Guinness Book of Records. (and I am proud to say that I bought a copy!)

I am really excited for the future of Will Young, and I really hope they will release his rendition of 'light my fire' as a single, Good Luck Will!

I thought he was much better than Gareth. The big question is, now everyone knows he's a friend of Dorothy, will the support and affection dry up? I don't see a homophobic newspaper like The Sun being too fond of him from now on. Very good op.
