Advantages: a great addition to the British music industry.
Disadvantages: none
William Young. ------------- Unless you've been in outer space for the last few months, or locked deep undersea in a submarine, then you will be well aware that William Young is the talented 23yr old man, who beat 10,000 other young hopefulls to becoming Pop Idol 2002. Pop Idol. -------- Pop Idol was a show broadcast on ITV1 on primetime TV on a Saturday evening, by those two Newcastle lads, Ant and Dec. It was the brainwave of Record boss Simon Fuller, to put a panel of judges together, to audition many young stars in Cities around Britain until they found their Pop Idol. The panel. --------- The panel was made up of four people from the music industry. Nasty truth speaking Simon Cowell, the sweet Nicky Chapman, the ageing Pete Waterman, and chart countdown man himself Dr Fox. In search of a star. ------------------- The panel travelled all over Britain and auditioned 10,000 people in order to find their true star. Will never stuck out as a star when he did his first audition with his rendition of Blame it on the boogie, and even threw in a rather pitiful little dance to go with it, in his rather casual but scruffy jeans. Out of the 10,000 youngsters they managed to pick their final fifty who would go on to the next round. This fifty were then split into five groups of 10 so the final ten could be found. The groups of ten then had to compete against one another, on live national telly, and then the home viewers could then phone in and vote for their favourite contestant. So for the following few weeks ahead we saw one group at a time compete against one another, and then the two contestants with the most votes would then go on to be in the final ten. Will sang a great version of Light my fire, but Simon Cowell disagreed and told him he sang average, to which Will gave him a piece of his mind, this making himself pop
ular with the home viewers, and managed to get a whopping 41% of the votes securing him a place in the final ten. William Young. ------------- William Robert Young is a 23yr old student with an identical twin brother Rupert, and 26yr old sister Emma who has a 3yr old son. He grew up with his rather well off family in Hungerford, recieving a private education, before now moving on to London to continue with his studies. The final ten. ------------- After the fifty were knocked down to the final ten we were left with Zoe, Gareth, Hayley, Laura, Rosie, Jessica, William, Korben, Darius, and Aaron. Week by week we saw Will sing with the other contestants live to the nation, and live studio audience, and the home viewers then got to vote for their favourite contestant, and the one with the least number of votes was then sent home. Will stood out as the one with the most outstanding, and unique voice, very much like that of Harry Connick Junior and Frank Sinatra. When Will sings a song he really puts his all into it making the song his own. His version of Aint no sunshine was truly outstanding, sounded much better than the original. Will never stood out as being a favourite to win, even though he did have the strongest of voices, and who didnt seem to put any effort in the way his magical voice came out. The last man standing. --------------------- So on the 9th of February we had Gareth Gates and William Young left as the final two who were hoping to be crowned Pop Idol 2002. It was a very close run race with Will get 4.6 million votes, which was 53.1% of the overall votes. Even though I really wanted Will to win, it still came as a complete shock to me when his name was announced as the winner. The reason for my lack of confidence in him is that Will does'nt strike you as your typical Pop Idol. When you think of a Pop Idol you ima
gine some one with boyish looks, and someone who the teenie boppers can drool over, something Will does'nt really have. Will is a shy well spoken 23yr old student, who wears scruffy clothes, and has a very large geeky smile. But obviously the nation knows a star when they hear one, this reflecting on the amount of votes he got! Future. ------ Managed by a member of the panel, Nicky Chapman, Will will go on to release his first single Anything is Possible, and Evergreen, a double A sided single which is released on the 25th of February, and has been tipped at going staight in at number one. The single originally featured on a Westlife album, and seemed like an ideal song for the winner of Pop Idol because of the wonderful lyrics. (Im gonna take this night and make it evergreen) All three of the final contestants, Darius, Gareth, and William sang and recorded the song as it was unaware as to who the final person would be. But Will definatley did the song justice, and I will definatley be purchasing a copy to help him get to that number one spot. I dont think Will will be as popular as Gareth as Gareth does have all the qualities of a pop idol with his boyish looks, and cheeky grin, but I also dont think we will see Will disappear either as he appeals to a far wider range of audience with fans of all ages. And has Pete Waterman said, he is'nt just a pop idol, he is a superstar, and this was said well before he won the contest. And even though he does have that geeky grin and scruffy outlook, he was still voted top date for valentines day by a top gay mens magazine, with Gareth coming in second!!! Stardom. ------- William is currently in rehearsals for a special Tv show for ITV1,after finishing the filming for the new video to his single. The show is to be broadcast on Saturday 23rd of February at 9pm in an hour long show featuring some of the former cont
estants, as well as some guest stars such as Rachel from S club 7 who will be singing a duet with Gareth. This will then be followed on by an indepth interview with Kate Thornton on ITV2. A video called Pop: A star is born, is also being made, featuring Will's early auditions and moments in pop idol, right through to the final night and the new video for his single. This video is due for release on March the 11th. Will has also already been tipped for number one single this christmas alongside Robbie Williams, with Gareth Gates closely behind. Thing to look out for. --------------------- * Release of the new single on the 25th of February. * The release of his album. * The re-union concert with the final 10 at wembley stadium. * Release of A star is born video on March the 11th. * Tv special on ITV1 Saturday 23rd of February. * Indepth interview on ITV2 on Saturday 23rd of February.
