Advantages: Chance to voice your opinion on TV
Disadvantages: Tragic tale of child slavery
Out of the two pop idol finalists Will strikes me as the stronger personality which may have been what finally swung the vote (I was however shocked that his styling of "Light my fire" did not count against him), If I was unkind I would say that Gareth came so close because he won the pity of nation he is pathetic after all. Even so I'm really not sure that Will has what it takes to stick around and winning against such poor competition is really no surprise. Despite the fact that Will's single is tipped to be the biggest debut seller ever he'll have to do a lot better than "Evergreen" to convince me to add any of his work to my album collection. There is still a great deal of debate as to which of these lads should have taken the title of Pop Idol, but at the end of the day the only result is that another bland formulaic money spinner has entered the charts. It doesn't matter which one got the most votes. I've heard the arguement that competitions like pop idol give a stepping stone to a music career. But it seems to me that it is little more than a chance for some sinister pop slave master to get their hands on some new puppets. These "artists" very rarely last more than a couple of years once the intitial marketing drive gets boring. I remind you that Robbie Williams escape from the mass grave of boy banddom is the exception and not the rule. Undoubtedly some of these kids have talent but this shortcut to fame will have robbed them of the opportunity to develope a personality and style that might really make them pop idols.

|
- 28/02/02 Don't forget that Evergreen was written without knowing which of the two would win, so a very different sort of music should emerge from the Will arena!!! |

- 27/02/02 Not quite long enough to rate a VU but it's good to see newbies taking note of ratings and trying to improve their opinions - better, not quite best.....
