Advantages: Flash in the pan
Disadvantages: Constant media coverage
I don't know about anyone else, and this is nothing personal against Will or any of the other "idols" , but I really can't muster up any enthusiasm for this kind of manufactured nonsense. He along with the other contestants obviously have talent, or they wouldn't have got so far and I wish them all well, but I can't help but feel that the entire thing along with popstars is just a huge marketing ploy, and the idols themselves have a very small part to play - they are merely a product to be marketed. How long will it be before "Management" decide they are no longer trendy and focus their energies on the next "big thing"? The next series of Pop Idol perhaps? For his sake I hope Will can do a Robbie Willaims and emerge from the whole thing as a fairly well respected artist, but will he be allowed to do this? Robbie seemed to have to turn in to a bit of a trouble maker for Take That's management to finally get rid of him but Will seems like too nice a guy to go down the Drink 'n' Drugs route. I read an interesting story where Will's manager or writer, whatever, contacted Sir Fab Macca asking if he'd like to collaborate. Mcartney told him exactly where to go, and I totally understand why.... the Beatles, along with most other artists/bands worked their way up in the industry by playing pubs and clubs and finally they were "discovered" whereas all these idols did was go along to an audition make their way through the various heats and then Bang, they're on Prime time telly on a Sat night pretty much guarenteed a record deal of some sort..... they surely can't have the same appreciation of what they have. Will these idols ever be accepted by their peers who have paid their dues? Do they care? I know I probably wouldn't if the money was rolling in and I was suddenly in the spotlight. Unfortunatley as long as people are buying the records,
and by the looks of things they certainly are, record executives will continue to churn out these manufactured acts. So any record execs reading this - no more manufactured bands please!!

- 19/05/02 Sorry for the low rating; I agree with your rant against manufactured music, but it's not specific to Will Young. |

- 18/04/02 I've only rated SU, mainly because you've haven't said anything at all. If you decide to add anything then let me know and I'll re-rate. Sue |

- 18/04/02 It may not seem fair but he got lucky! If you had the chance to get that rich I'm sure you'd take it. And he seems like a nice bloke even if his music is pants. |
