I am really stuck on what to write an opinion on today, hence why I am writing one on Will Young. I am just sitting by my computer well in the mood for writing something for half an hour or so, but when it comes to the crunch, I have nothing to write about. So I thought I'd browse through some categories for some inspiration and , what do you know, I came across Will Young! I remember having some opinions on him to say the least when Pop Idol was on- which in my opinion was a complete waste of valuable prime time TV slots once it got to the last 10 (just slightly repetitive...) but then we don't often see much quality TV on our normal terrestrial channels these days... ...Anyway, back to the subject in hand, Will Young. My general feeling tends to be that he has made the worst career move of his life by becoming a 'pop idol' as he is commonly known. After all, what does being a pop idol really mean? To me, a pop idol gets all the 12/13 year old girls screaming over them because their early puberty stage and crazy hormones cause them to fancy the pants off any young impressionable person who happens to have dangly bits between their legs and, even better, happens to be FAMOUS (sorry for being cynical, but I was a spotty hormone crazed teenager once so I talk from experience) Where was I? Oh yes, pop idols. Don't get me wrong, Will Young is an extremely talented young man, that is just my point; that is what makes this all such a real shame. He has a very distinctive and entertaining voice, he can make just about any song sound reputable, he is musically gifted- what with playing the piano and guitar and God only knows what else, and what's more, he can write songs, which can be a very demanding tricky task (been there, tried that, realised I was never going to be famous for my song-writing skills). Despite all these talents, Will has degraded himself to nothing more than an 'idol' for spotty teens and a pin-up in a few old pe
ople's homes. Pop Idol was entertaining for some but was highly criticised for being too tacky and commercialised. It was on for just 10 weeks in the final stages (although that seemed like an awfully long time to some!) and 10 weeks is not a long time if you are thinking in terms of how long you want your career to last. Will's career will last a little longer than 10 weeks but he will end up as just another passing phase of the bored general public, take Here' say for example; they did well at first, but now people are beginning (beginning??!!) to tire of them and write them off as just another unoriginal commercialised pop band who don’t and can’t sing live (although the pop idols had to sing live, which was good.) Some of the people who appeared on pop idol- like Gareth Gates for example were meant to be pop idols- they are the kind of people one can mould to fit in with the desires of the young teen and wrinkly granny population; they have that butter-wouldn’t-melt look about them, they have squeaky high pitched girlie voices etc. etc. Will Young, however, is more original. Someone with his multi-talents is wasted here. Take his song writing abilities. So far, Will has released two songs that are just glammed-up copies of other people’s work. Sure, it pleased the public for a while, but how long before they get tired of a person who is only known for releasing other people’s material? And that’s what kind of a name he is making for himself at the moment, so when he finally does get to release his own songs, he will have a mammoth task in trying to be shot of his commercialised, copy-releasing tacky pop image. A better move for Will would’ve been to go the longer way around; sending copies of his songs and musical talent to record companies, gradually making a name for himself as one of the Nation’s most talented stars. He could’ve been huge had he waited for his big bre
ak, because when you have a guy with talent just oozing out of his ears, you know it’s only a matter of time before they become very famous indeed. Ok, so maybe to some I am talking out of my backside; if you get a chance like that for fame and fortune, you take it quicker than you can say “pop idol” (most people probably would) and if you are looking for a short career, then that is fine. Maybe even having a short career is fine if you make enough money to live on for the rest of your life and never have to lift a finger again! Yes, that would be fine! But if you are a person with obviously unusual talents, and you are looking for a career with lots of substance, one that is going to last, one which you are still going to be admired for fifty years down the line, then maybe pop idol is not the best career move for you. I suppose it would be just a bit TOO sensible to be thinking in terms of your future fifty years down the line when you are given an instant opportunity for short term fame and fortune, but logically, that’s the way it is. Maybe I am wrong to criticise Will in this way; after all, he is loved by millions, he is extremely wealthy, he is full of talent and he has achieved his lifetime goal of becoming famous for his musical talents. So, really, he hasn’t done too badly for himself, has he? All I am really trying to say is that maybe if pop idol had never existed, we might’ve been blessed in a couple of years time with a high quality singer, songwriter and musician who would’ve made it big all by himself and therefore would have the full respect of the entire Nation, not just the ol’ wrinklies and the hormone driven obsessive teens. That’s all.
