The most vivid musical memories of a not-entirely musical childhood are of one album -Band On The Run, by Paul McCartney & Wings. A mainstay of long car journeys during the 1970s, it's an album beloved of my parents and now - almost 30 years later - I find myself eagerly snapping up this latest Wings compilation, as though having already bought the majority of McCartney's back-catalogue on CD was not already proof enough of his music's enduring excellence, and of its place in my affections. A double-CD,40 song retrospective of Macca's post-Fab Four stuff, including his efforts with wings,the successful 70's band he formed with wife Linda and chums. What's it like? Luckily,Paul turns out to be a good judge of his songs,hand-picking his best songs to show off the remarkable range and depth of his tunesmithery.The collection is divided into 'Hits' on one CD and 'History' on the other. Thankfully there's no place for 'We all stand together' or 'Ebony and Ivory'.
