The NHS is in a terrible state. Just this week a Libyan couple took over a special care baby unit when the woman gave birth to sextuplets. Apparently she travelled against doctors' advice. Was that because the NHS is free over here? A few days later we hear of a British girl expecting quads in the next few weeks. She can't be guaranteed an intensive care cot for them all especially in the same unit, yet these Libyan babies are all together.

People from overseas often come to Britain, fall ill and take advantage of free care but if we went to their country we would come back with a huge bill.

We need more doctors, more nurses and a return to the high standards we used to have.

My father in law went into hospital just before Christmas with a bad back and badly swollen feet. Although he went in in an ambulance he still had to wait hours in casualty unable to move at all and in agony.
Another patient was brought in by ambulance alone and left in a wheelchair next to the automatic doors which were stuck open. He was wearing thin pyjamas and if my mother in law hadn't complained he probably would have had hypothermia.

My father in law's meals were brought to him butleft out of his reach. We only found this out when we visited early one day and saw the full meal being taken away. When we complained we were told they thought he didn't want it (he had lost lots of weight in 2 weeks and they didn't know why!). After that we made sure we were there every mealtime.

Soon after we went in to find him in a side ward alone. We were told he had an infection in his nose which lots of elderly patients get. From there he went downhill. We had our suspicions and eventually got a doctor to admit it was the hospital superbug.

My father in law died in that hospital from something he never should have had. If he hadn't been so weak from malnutrition he may have had the strength to fight it.

We ar
e still very angry about this. My kids have lost a wonderful grandad, I have lost a great friend and companion and his wife and children still can't believe he has gone. After all you don't die from a bad back.

7 months have now passed. My son needs an operation and we can't allow him to go to that hospital.

The standard of hygiene was terrible. In the side ward there was blood from another patient on the floor under a chair. We didn't notice this for 3 days. The cleaners just mopped and wiped where they could see.

This would not have happened in the old days of the matron.

Instead of all the highly paid penpushers in their posh offices and highly paid consultants who most of the time you can't understand, lets have more doctors and nurses on the wards and give the good nurses a pay rise. The hospital my father in law was in, well I'm afraid I wouldn't go there if it was the last place on earth

Thanks for your opinion! I am a nurse and I am afraid your observations are commonplace all over the NHS. It makes me sick and makes me so mad that nothing is done about it. The government are always quick to blame cleaners and nurses for the lack of hygiene in hospitals and it is not fair. We need more nurses and cleaners because at the moment we are all stretched to the absolute limit and when it comes to cleaning, it has to take a back seat compared to giving drugs, doing wound dressings etc. It is disgraceful that in this day and age that you have been subjected to such bad care and my heart goes out to you. Sorry to rant, but this issue really does upset me and I am considering leaving the NHS (see my op. on nursing)as I am exhausted and disillusioned with the whole set up.

Good op highlighting some of the extremely poor aspects of the NHS. Ross
