Advantages: Free Health Care
Disadvantages: Money Wasted
IN 1948 the National Health service was set up to provide health care for all citizens of the United Kingdom, bases solely on need and not on the ability to pay. Hospitals and Doctors would diagnose and treat disease, injuries, care for those with long term illness and disability, and promote health care with education, immunisation etc. This would all be funded by the “Taxpayer,”and therefore be accountable to Parliament. So..we would all pay, weekly or monthly, mostly directly from our wages and we would all receive treatment as and when we needed it. What a great idea!! Sadly not all the money that is taken off us in Tax goes to the NHS, we pay for Education, For the armed forces and Police to protect us and our country, we pay to keep people in prison, we support people who cannot or will not work, we offer assistance to those on a low income, those with children, to those who seek asylum in this country and of course we build things like the Millennium Dome! So many things to do, so many bills to pay! So, the debate at the moment is should we pay more tax to have a better NHS? And if so, then how much more? Should those who are richer pay more? Should those who are poor pay anything at all? Should those who use the services more than others pay more?...Or..what about using the money we have already got in a better way!!! Around one million people work for the NHS in England and it costs more than £50 billion a year to run, but what are they all doing!!!! and where is all the money going? My honest opinion is that we waste probably millions! Here is a personal observation. Recently I was waiting in my Doctors surgery when a lady came in to book an appointment to see the Doctor, she had a letter with her which she gave to the receptionist. The lady could not speak any English and the letter was information on how to book a translator for her, who would sit in on her appoi
ntment with the Doctor. This was done by the receptionist over the telephone who confirmed that the £22.00 per hour fee for the translator would be paid by the NHS. To say I was astounded is an understatement!! How many times a day must this be happening throughout the country I wonder?? Is this really the way in which we should be spending this money which apparently needed for vital medicines and operations. I think before any of us start paying anymore we should really look at how it is being spent now! I can liken it to giving my children pocket money and them spending it all on rubbish and then not have anything left for the important things..would I just keep giving them more, still knowing that they will spend that on rubbish too and the important things still have not been bought! I don’ t think so!!! So before we all dip our hands deeper into our pockets lets just take stock and see where it is has all gone wrong! I think we would be in for a real eye opener!

Catmantes - 16/02/02 We all agree that the NHS needs reform. I really think it is time for our contributions to the NHS to be listed seperate in our wage packets. A Health Levy you if like. Then we know exactly how much we are paying in. We all we then realise if we need to pay more, and how much more we are all prepared to pay.
Barbara is right about waste. My mother work in the NHS for 30 years. When our local hospital became a trust, no expense was spared on corporate identity, new curtains and ecoration. The cahir of the Trsut ( a friend of my mum,s as it happens) suddenly got a new jag as she was Chair of the Board!
Tell me there's no waste. How many operations would that have paid for? How many nurses? |
