Advantages: Efficient, Value for money, Best qualified staff

Disadvantages: high waiting lists, bad press, no public support

I love the National Health Service, but not many do, it gets used and abused. Treatment toward the NHS could be likened to that of a foot being wiped on a mat. That is how the public treat this truly marvelous service.

The NHS was established in 1948 as a cornerstone of the welfare state and incorporates the principle of health care as a citizens right, whatever their economic and social circumstances.

The deal was we pay national insurance tax, or stamp duty, to be able to recieve. Payin to take out was a well known phrase. In just over 50 years, the NHS has built and renovated thousands of hospitals nationwide. The facilities and equipment are up to date, to make the NHS the leading health Authority in the world.

However, why are there so many problems?

We expect too much. Since the NHS was formed, our population has grown rapidly and life expectancy has increased. However, we contribute such a small amount of our earnings toward the NHS, there is just no way it can provide the all in service, once dreamed in 1948. To be bale to provide a service, we must be prepared to pay a little more toward it.

Nursing pays very little, and doctors get paid a pittance if you take into account what the actually do. Our hospitals are full to the brink with agency staff, because there are not enough qualified staff. It has got so bad, that if there were no agency staff, over half of the hospitals in the UK would close due to low staffing.

There is no 'special' incentives for student nurses, and so student levels are at their lowest. The same can be said for other pulic services such as the fire service and the police. We all need to sit and think, yes, if i pay just 3p more from the pound, nursing, fireservices and police wages will go up, and so we will retain the staff, and in turn our service will improve.

In my local area one firstation has closed due to insufficient funding, police ca
nnot patrol, as there is insuficient staff, and community nursing services have been cut back. Do we want to see our truly wonderfull public services diminish, or do we want to support them?

Please, don't blame the health service, or the fire service, or the police force, support us all. Without the good moral, our public workers are leaving in droves, and soon we will all be paying an arm and a leg for private services, which in theory are a good idea, but believe me, behind the scenes, they paint a totaly different picture.

Our public services are not crap, they are truly a godsend, so please, take a longer look. Look further than the media smoke screen, because there really is a sliver lining if you look a little closer......

I agree that we are lucky to have the NHS. Imagine living in the US, having jsut lost your job and have no health insurance. Imagine breaking your leg and sitting in a waiting room for the 'paupers' doctor' to get to you. WE have waiting lists and empty beds, we have staff shortages, but we have essentially one of the best services in the world despite this. 14years ago I needed a spinal op to prevent disability. It was urgent, they saw this and within two months I was the proud owner of a titanium spine. The consultant was the best in the country at the time, the team he had was the best in the NHS at the time. I would have had to wait longer in the private sector to get the surgeon's attention and it would have cost my parents approximately £10k. All this and five yeras of after care I got from the NHS.

I have nothing but praise for those who work within the NHS on groudn level. I also believe that in order for the NHS to get good management, they have to pay the going rate. I am now in a position to be able to afford insurance, why don't we ask that those who can do, but then use the NHS facilities, thereby putting money back into the coffers and supporting the system at the same time?

I agree that we once had a truly fantastic health service; which I think is still good ,but could be much better. It would be great to think that the Government could fund this, but the money has to come from somewhere. If we are to have a health service, such as the fantastic one in Germany, for example, we have to pay for this ourselves - that means more money in taxes - I for one am prepared to pay.
I agree also about lack of incentives for people to take up nurse training. the bursary they receive is pitiful - how anyone could be expected to support a family on the amount is beyond me.Great op!

I think all staff at a hands on level are great, it's just a shame that the administrators and government are not pulling thier weight!
