Advantages: Could safe a life, Hide an ugly feature, Very affordable

Disadvantages: None

First let me start with a shocking statistic, accidents are the most common cause of death in children aged one ? five. Those curiosity ages when children where know no fear, everything is so exciting for them ? especially anything ?adult? which makes our job as parents all the more hard. There are so many dangers around the home it?s scary! One of the best ways for you to see the hazards and dangers in your own home is for you to be at baby level, go on your hands and knees and see what you can get to. There are the obvious hazards of stairs, where you store cleaning products, the oven, fires and heaters, tablecloths, small objects on the floor or within reach that your child could choke on and electrical sockets which your child can poke things in.

So what exactly are socket covers?

Ok, it is as simple as it sounds; they are plastic sockets which fit into electric sockets that are not in use. This is to prevent children from poking things into them, such as their fingers or small objects such as straws, pens etc. The Mothercare socket covers come in a pack of 12 for just £3.99. What a bargain for something that could safe a life, covers an ugly feature and lasts a lifetime. They are white plastic socket shaped covers which easily fit into a standard 13amp electrical socket. They are shaped just like a normal plug but they are plastic. It doesn?t do the plastic sockets any harm if the switched is turned on by accident, however when you notice this switch it off.

So why should everyone have socket covers?

Surely it is just for those people with children? Well, no, do you have children visit your house, do you ever baby sit a relative or a friends child. As a mother of a very active 14 month old girl who tries to get everywhere and explores new surroundings with such wonder and awe, and determination to do so, I find it a chore rather than a pleasure to have her at other people?s homes. As soon as you enter someone?s ho
use you immediately find yourself scanning the room for potential dangers. I fully appreciate that if you don?t have children then of course you should have your home the way you wish it to be, but how could it be any inconvenience on your part to have socket covers.

I think they are a smart idea, if you?re not using something then you put it away and these follow that principle. We want everything we own to have a home, a place it belongs when you have finished using it, so when you not using an electrical socket why not cover it up, for safety and appearance. Electrical sockets are hardly attractive, you can buy attractive covers that go around them and improve the look of them so why not go one step further and hide those ugly pins, if not for safety then for image.

So you have put it in, now how do you get it out?

Well ok, finger nails do come in handy here. I find it is best to go for one corner and it easily comes out. This is not any inconvenience at all. Just remember that because it is in an electrical socket never try to get it out with anything metal as that?s a risk just not worth taking. Just remember if you have children to store them safely away and not to leave them hanging around. Your child will think it?s a toy and try and play with it.

So, now I have my electrical sockets covered that?s the end of my hazards with electric?

Not at all I am afraid. When you have a child unfortunately safety concerns change all the time, just because you get rid of one risk doesn?t mean the end of it. Is anything plugged in with the cable daggling so that your child can pull it off, like a lamp, kettle, iron, the list is endless. Could your child pull this cable and injure themselves, either by having something land on their head or by pulling a weaken cable and getting a potential killer electrical shock. Beware also of the risk of fire due to electrical appliances, by worn electrical cables or by plugging t
oo many plugs into a socket. When you purchase an electrical extension lead that offers you more than one socket make sure that it is powerful enough to carry the electrical current of the appliances you plug into it. Make sure that you have fire alarms fitted correctly, tested regularly and in all the appropriate rooms ? it could safe your life.

Is it worth me rushing out to get these?

Ok, they cost just £3.99 for 12; this was plenty for my home, and a one of payment. You can get them in a Home Safety Starter Pack, also from Mothercare for £9.99. For your £9.99 you get a fridge lock, video lock, 12 socket covers, 8 corner cushions, a door slammer stopper, and 6 catches to stop your little one getting into cupboard and drawers. A brilliant offer for anyone child proofing their home. You can buy socket covers from most baby store, such as Boots, Toys R us and Sainsburys. They are all around they same price and don?t really offer anything difference between them, how many functions would they really need to do? I would definitely recommend anyone to get them as they are so affordable, look could and could just safe a little one from a very nasty accident.

Conclusion

I have you haven?t felt that I have given you all a lecture on safety; I just think you can never be too safe when it comes to your family and especially with little ones.

Thanks for any ratings and comments you leave and I hope this review has helped you take a look around your own home and evaluate the dangers and hazards.

I write as a qualified electrical engineer and fellow of the Institution of Engineering and Technology, the professional body for UK engineers.

I would like to draw attention to the DANGERS of using socket covers.

Since the 1940's the 13A power sockets used in the UK have had to incorporate a shutter mechanism which prevents anything but a power plug being inserted into them, thus little fingers cannot touch anything dangerous. Socket covers will fit into a socket because they are designed to be the same shape as a power plug, however small differences in their design mean that it is possible to insert them upside down into the earth socket only, this disables the safety mechanism and renders the socket dangerous.
