Advantages: Can offer support
Disadvantages: Help you lose £s
As a former slimming instructor for Slimming World and the proprietor of my own slimming clubs with medically approved diets once upon a time, and now weighing more than thirteen stone, I do question just who the slimming clubs are for. I was at the library last week and five women passed me to go up the stairs to a slimming club...they all looked as if they needed drips! Without exception, each looked anorexic and could not have weighed more than 35 stone collectively. I learned a long time ago that women who go to slimming clubs and I include myself, are generally quite sad people. There are the exceptions, I will admit, those who genuinely need advice and support to lose excess pounds. But, overall, I found that women who had two or three pounds to lose were self-obsessed and, when they lost weight became disatisfied with something else...the shape of their nose or the colour of their eyes. I worked with enough women to know that the root of their unhappiness with themselves usually lay with their relationship with the one closest to them. Diets are a waste of time, people should eat want they want. If they wish to lose weight then eat less of it, if they want to gain weight then eat more. The only way to succeed is to eat what is liked and what is intended to be eaten for the rest of one's life. Apart from a few success stories...and many of those revert back in size...the only pounds slimmers attending clubs lose are those they took in their purse.

Volpina - 11/05/02 You have such a nice writing style I was sory to see you hadn't written more. I do agree with your comments though. I too went to a few clubs (although not slimming world)but the disappointment I felt after not losing much compared to the others made me feel embarrassed and disheartened so I stopped going, each time. I think weight is a very private issue and so the parading of success/failure doesn't suit me. Caroline |
