Berghaus are manufacturers of mountaineering equipment and are mostly known for their technical clothing and rucksacks.
What makes Berghaus so popular is that their ranges span the area between the budget brands (which often fall down on performance and durability) and the high end brands (while perform fantastically are often too good for what the user needs).
Their clothing range covers everything you would ever need on a mountaineering trip from baselayers through to the most rugged hardshell as well as accessories such as hats and gloves. What Berghaus have done well is that for each item a number of option are available to make it right for the user, for example, baselayers are available in short or long sleeve, with or without a quarter zip.
Midlayers are available from the microfleece at £35 through to a £250 duvet jacket with dozens of option in between with a similar story with the outer layers with the top end incorporating the best of Goretex waterproof and breathable technologies.
A note on sizing they come up smaller than normal so its always good to try on in store.
Their rucksack range again is second to none with ovr 60 models to choose from covering the smallest daypack to large expedition packs. Whether it's a minimalist lightweight bag or one with pockets in pockets you are likely to find something to suit. Regular updates are made to products to improve them year on year and they have some of the best back systems around.
The recently added EXTREM range is the moniker for the items which perform at a higher range and attract a higher price pushing them to compete with some of the top end brands. From what i've tried they are definately a level above their standard range.
Their tent range seems to be performing well and they have made some nice designs but it doesn't seem to be a key market with a limited range.
Over the years i've had a number of Berghaus products and never been disappointed with any of them and they quite regularly form the benchmark for other brands to beat. I don't like buying the expensive brands because i tend to ruin them too quickly so a good mid range item is perfect for me with good levels of performance at a reasonable price.
