There are 2 department stores in Colchester, The main stream Debenhams department store in Culver Square and the local Williams and Griffiths Department store on the High Street. This is a unique department store found only in Colchester with typical meezzanine old school lay out.
Debenhams, as I'm sure we all know, stocks a wide range of own brand merchandise as well as famous high street names e.g. Coast, Faith, benefit makeup to name but a few which I will call main stream
Williams and Griffiths tend to go slightly upper market on their suppliers for designer goods e.g. Links of London Jewellery, Mulberry bags, Mac make-up.
I would estimate that Williams and Griffiths are approx 30% more expensive than Debenhams but you can always find that bespoke gift when you are struggling for present ideas and most of their products come with a big brand name.
Both have restaurants with Debenhams catering for the breakfast and lunch deal range with a better quality menu on offer at Williams and Griffiths
I have found that the staff in Williams and Griffiths have a family friendness to them unlike the mis-mash of different stores in Debenhams abd have found the staff working in the clothes and kitchenware department to be very helpful in trying out products and giving unbiased advice. There always seems to be some sort of presentation of the latest gadget.
House of Fraser are rumored to be coming to Colchester but lets not hold our breath in the current economic climate but here's hoping !
