Advantages: Great bargains

Disadvantages: getting addicted and spending all your money

Can you get addicted to Ebay? Well in my opinion yes you can.

I consider myself a long term Ebayer as I have been using their site for the last 5 years. Of those 5 years I have bought and sold and found there to be a few problems with each side.

I started out hearing about Ebay from a friend, and when I eventually got hooked up on the internet I thought that I would give it a go. I could not believe my eyes at first. There seemed to be so many bargains, but I soon learnt that you could easily get carried away with it all.

There seemed to be a certain buzz of excitement putting in my bid and waiting to see if I had won. Unfortunately quite often I didnt win, because I had yet to learn the tricks of the trade. I was getting outbid at the very last second, so I learnt to watch the items that I was bidding on until the very last minute to monitor the action. This then led to me getting carried away with my bidding, and I would go vastly over my original intended limit to spend. I was getting the rush of excitement as the final seconds of the auction were ticking away. Then there was either disapointment or great happiness to see that I had won or lost the item.

Unfortunately once I had got going on Ebay I was hooked, and started to look everything up on it. I was slowly filling my house with Ebay purchases. After a while my money situation stopped me from continuing this trend, and I snapped out of it. I then didnt use Ebay for a while, until a friend at work told me all about how much money she had made on Ebay by selling her stuff.

This sounded interesting to me, so I went out and bought a cheap digital camera, and I was set to sell on Ebay. I told myself that I would only sell and that I would not even look on there for anything to buy.

When it came to selling on Ebay I was loving it. Actually I think I was addicted to it for a while. I was thinking about Ebay all the time. It became so much work to be a seller, as I had once again over done it. I had gone to extreme and was selling so much stuff I could just about keep up with it all.

I was selling anything in the house which wasnt tied down. Which was quite good as I needed to de-clutter, but then I ran out of things to sell. So my next plan was to go to car boot sales to pick up cheap stuff that would sell on Ebay for more. I would trail round boot sales every sunday morning bright and early, and pick up my bargains for Ebay. This seemed to work really well, and I made quite a bit of money out of it.

Unfortunately it became alot of work to keep up with. I was always on the computer, before work, after work, at work!! Just to try to keep up with it all. I seemed to be either on the computer, at the bank paying in the cheques, or at the Post office sending the parcels. The money was great, but the novelty had well worn off by this point. However I would still get a buzz from seeing the bidders trying to outbid each other at the last minute (as I once had done).

I think that I had burnt myself out with selling on Ebay. You know that feeling you get when you eat your favourite chocolates, but you eat so many that they make you feel sick and you couldnt eat another one. Well I felt that I had had too much of Ebay!!

Or so I thought............the selling stopped and the buying started up again. I just couldnt help myself!! I try to keep myself under control, but every now and then I have a spending spree on there (which I am having at the moment) and find it so hard to not buy stuff. Especially when evry search you do on the internet brings up an Ebay item in the listing somewhere to draw you to their site.

Over the years of using Ebay I have come across many problems including paying for items which never turn up, and selling items which I then never receive payment for. But all in all I would recommend Ebay to people. I would just warn them not to get as carried away as I did, and know your limits!!

Summary: Ebay is great but for finding a bargain, but needs to be done in moderation
