Advantages: Great for getting rid of junk!
Disadvantages: Fake stuff, dissapointing sellers
I am ally and I am an ebay-aholic!!
The problem with eBay is it is a MASSIVE online store...a haven for shopaholics, spendaholics, sellaholics (does that exist?) and yes it is totally addictive. I like being on both sides of eBay: I do A LOT of selling (mostly clothes and shoes) and buy a few bit's a pieces (usually from registered stores rather than personal sellers).
BUYING
Is great. Especially when you get a real bargain. I usually search for clothes and shoes and a lot of the time they can be picked up at bargain prices, especially designer makes. My favourite place on eBay to shop is Schuh's store which sells a massive variety of shoes (a lot of ex-display shoes but still in fantastic condition) I could literally spend hundreds here - if my bank balance would allow it. I usually have tons of shoes on my "watch" list and keep and eye on them day by day sometimes hour by hour to check what price they are going to sell at. If a pair of shoes get too expensive I delete them from my "watch" list and keep and eye on the cheaper ones, I have got some real bargains in the past some of my shoes had nothing more than scuffs to the soles and I have picked them up for £5 - £10 when their RRP is £60+. Occasionally after being shopping on the high street or looking through beauty magazines for inspiration I will have a little look on eBay to see if they have got anything that's bang on trend - sometimes there will be a nice little vintage style item or something quite unusual in keeping with trends but it does take a while to scroll through the junk! Also there are a lot of replicas on eBay, which is good in a way if you cannot afford to buy a chanel handbag or Vivienne Westwood jewellery for instance, but you really have to be careful regarding how fake an item looks. Some of the fakes will look great others are a bit dodgy...
SELLING
Selling I find is more addictive then buying. I started clearing out my wardrobe last year and have found it quite enjoyable to put it on eBay to make a bit of profit (I am a skint student with fees to pay and a social life to fund!). It is great when items sell a bit disheartening when it doesn't right enough! It is great watching an item going from 99p and climbing up and up and up - I get so excited if one of my items sells for a fiver! I also find its like running a little business, packing up and posting items etc. Good fun if you like that sort of thing! Problem now is I cannot stop clearing out!! I have so much unused stuff - I will re-list and item on eBay 3 times maximum then it goes in the boot sale bag...and that's a nice Sunday morning early rise to sell more things!
So yeah it is a nice, non-harmful (in some cases!) addiction to have. A lot of the time it keeps me from spending as I get more a buzz from selling the items and watching my paypal account grow and grow. I definetly advise in these credit crunching times to get on board with eBay it can be enjoyable and the fees are much less now than what they used to be!
Summary: A great wee site!
