There is, in certain quarters, something of a stigma about ecco shoes; a school of thought that suggests that only the type of person with an Aga and labradors would wear them. Certainly when it comes to cutting edge fashion, ecco aren't at the front of the race. But as someone who's spent very many years, from 16inch platforms to scarey stilletos, sacrificing comfort for style, I've found one or two styles each season in this range that wouldn't get laughed off the catwalk.

My first eccos I bought in a sale, largely because I really needed something I could stand in all day without almost crippling myself for the next week. They were a bit more staid than my usual style - but, heck - it was a sale! Anyway, I wore them for just one day and I was converted. That, in itself, is a minor miracle. i don't think I've ever had a pair of shoes that haven't needed at least some breaking in. Not the eccos, however.

The next minor miracle I realised had happened about two years later. I'd worn my eccos once or twice a week almost every week in that time - and they were still in great condition. I'd had them heeled a few times, but the uppers, while not exactly as good as new, were still perfectly serviceable. That's when I began my ecco buying binge. I've now acquired a pair or two every year for almost ten years. That very first pair have sadly gone to that great cobblers' in the sky. The rest are doing just great.

Some of the styles are certainly naff, but the good ones are well worth hunting out.
