Advantages: Low fat, versatile.

Disadvantages: Unidentifiable flavour.

Quorn sausages have been out for a while now. They cost around £1.60 for 6 and you can get them in the freezer section of most supermarkets.

They are quite tasty but don't taste anything like meat. Nor do they have the same texture as a real meat sausage. It is difficult to describe the flavour as it is quite unique. The texture however, depends on how you cook them. If you just fry them in a little oil the outside is crispy and the inside is quite moist and soft, but not squidgy. They don;t taste that great on their own, but with a splash of gravy they are nice.

I tend to make things with the sausages such as casseroles and stews. Like most quorn products, you need to put them with something that will give them more flavour. They do contain bits of onion but it does not overpower the flavour of the sausage.

You can buy them fresh or frozen, either way they are easy to cook. Either put them in the oven or fry. I haven't tried grilling them.

They are very low in fat, about 5% so they are quite healthy.

I'm not too sure if meateaters would like them very much as they do not taste anything like meat. But, worth a try!

I am currently on Weight Watchers and love the Quorn sausages even though I am not vegetarian, and they are very healthy even if they are processed :)

Well, I was thinking more in terms of the amount of fat they contain. Nothing you eat is totally safe. I watched my friend cut into a burger type thing once and out popped part of a cow's eyeball!

How do you know that myco-protein products are 'healthy' ?

A completely 'manufactured' product sounds dodgy to me. Give me Pork 'n Leek in my sausages any day. Yum Yum.
