Advantages: Good range of proper sporting products, good service

Disadvantages: None

Increasingly it is becoming hard to find decent sports shops on the high street. Stores like JD Sports and Sports Connection tend to appeal more to those who like to wear the gear, but wouldn’t have the faintest idea what sport is all about. If any of these shops do cater for genuine sporting people, then it is almost always football alone that is accounted for.

Greaves Sports is a real sports shop, one that sells the sort of products that any serious sports person would require. It is extremely difficult nowadays to find anywhere that sells proper athletics clothing, rather than the Kappa casual wear favoured by so many of Glasgow’s younger generation.

Greaves has three stores in Glasgow, the main one being the Gordon Street store (just opposite the Borders book store), with a smaller one near the bottom of Sauchiehall Street, and a small store in the Buchanan Galleries entirely devoted to Nike.

One of the best things about Greaves is that they sell genuine sports shoes as opposed to casual trainers. As an athlete, I appreciate the range of quality running shoes they sell. They are one of the few stores to sell spikes (spiked running shoes, in case you are wondering!). I don’t know of any other sports shop in Glasgow that still sells spikes, so if you can’t find what you want in Glasgow, your only other option is to buy mail order.

The Gordon Street store has an entire floor devoted to golf products, including some very nice clothing that will appeal to those like me who can’t swing a golf club to save their lives… The top floor is given over to outdoor sports, so if you are into skiing or climbing, this is the place to go. If you are merely after a decent fleece, or a weatherproof jacket, the range on offer is well worth checking out.

If football is your sport, then the basement floor should offer everything you require. Replica strips are displayed in glass cases. The shop
also offers a service where you can get letters and numbers added to your favourite football strip if you want. As you descend to the lower level, make sure you have a look at some of the signed strips on the walls – they always seem to have signed strips from some of the biggest names in the game.

The staff are generally very knowledgeable, which makes a nice change from your average sports shop. Their returns policy is one of the more enlightened I have experienced. A number of times in the past I have had to return items bought as presents, and they have never been a problem to deal with.

It is always worth stopping into Greaves if you are passing, as they quite often have a sale on. After Christmas especially, you will find some impressive prices.

Greaves must be my favourite sports shop. It offers the right range of products, and the prices are perfectly reasonable. If you are a dedicated sports person, this shop should cater for all your requirements.

You won't find a better sports shop. We'll go there every time we're in Glasgow. They have very helpful and skilled staff. They can really "sell" you what you need. I like the Golf dept. very much and they have great collections of soccer shirts.

Good review. I completely understand what you mean about the "fashion sport shops". I prefer mail order companies nowadays, as they tend to do more specialist equipment.
