Advantages: Beautiful quiet location, Lovely food, Not too busy
Disadvantages: Not the place to go if you like a lively resort
I stayed in the Ranweli resort in January 2003 for two fabulous weeks and have just returned to the grey skies of London. Ranweli Holiday Village is one of the most beautiful, tranquil and relaxing places I have ever stayed in (and I have travelled a lot). It is located approximately 45 minutes from Colombo Airport and is on a peninsula with the Indian Ocean one side and a lagoon on the other side. There are regular "bird watching" and other boat trips along the river which are both interesting and relaxing. I believe Ranweli resort is ahead of its time with its "eco-friendly" policies. The food is delicious and grown in the surrounds of the resort. There is a vast choice of food for every meal and vegetarians are well catered for. The curries were my favourite but there is plenty of other food if curry is not your 'thing'. I loved my bungalow which was large, comfortable and with spectacular views of the ocean. I was able to open the patio doors and step straight on to the beach - ah bliss. All the bungalows were very close to the sea. The staff were extremely helpful and friendly and I could not find a fault if I tried. I hope to go back next year to recap on the meditation, bird watching, etc.
