The channel ABC1 first came to my attention when I was scanning Freeview a few years ago, and primarily airs American comedies and dramas, such as Scrubs and Commander in Chief. The problem isn't so much with the content, but with the way in which it is delivered, even adhering to the American's horrendous advertising system, where a typical episode of Scrubs runs like this:
*Adverts from previous program*
SCRUBS OPENING SEGMENT AND OPENING CREDITS
10 MINUTES OF SCRUBS
FINAL 10 MINUTES OF SCRUBS
*ADVERT BEFORE THE CREDITS*
CREDITS OF SCRUBS
*Adverts before next program*
It's an incredibly annoying, disorientating format, and if you've ever watched American TV you'll no doubt have become frustrated by their absurd amount of advertising. It isn't even reasonable, and detracts from an otherwise decent line-up of shows.
Admittedly, though, it is largely fluffy American soap-esque dramas like 8 Simple Rules, and frankly it could be a bit edgier and have something that has, you know, potent drama as opposed to this tweeny bopper stuff. It is silly, light entertainment at the end of the day and I guess that's what some people want, but most beguiling is that ABC haven't even used their home-grown dramas like Lost and Desperate Housewives which have been huge ratings hits elsewhere (unless their contract with the rights to Sky1 for Lost was exclusive?). It would surely drive some much-needed ratings their way.
I don't watch ABC1 much because of the insane number of adverts peppering any given program, and while Scrubs would be the main attraction, I don't like the show enough to sit through about 15 minutes of adverts to get through a 21-minute episode, and the rest of the content doesn't really interest me that much anyway.
It is not really a surprise that this channel has now ceased to broadcast on my Virgin package as all it seemed to do was show a constant stream of repeats. It had a few good shows which were mostly comedies but it only seemed to have the rights to a couple of series of each and it showed them constantly from week to week.
The other thing that I found annoying with the channel was the fact that it adopted the American style of showing commercials in that a thirty minute show would start and then two minutes in it would cut to adverts, then it would show the bulk of the episode before cutting away to adds again. It would then return for the conclusion of the show, there would be no adverts between shows just an announcer doing a one line (often corny and repeated line from show to show) link before the next show started only to go straight into a commerial break. This meant that you got two chunks of adverts within a ten minute period.
During the day most of the shows were coemdies, they did have the excellent Scrubs whic was my main reason for watching as well as the passable Home Improement and Twelve Rules for Dating my Daughter however there was some awful American comedy as well like Hope and Faith which was dire. In the evenings there was more drama after 9.00 but most of these shows were poor with maybe the only one i ever watched being Ghost Whisperer which was ok.
To be honest this is not a channel that I will miss much as it showed way too many repeats.
Though the name suggests it, ABC1 is not a kids channel. Yeah, it has kid shows on it, but theyre only on for about a couple of hours every week day. The rest is American comedy. American comedy is what it sounds like-comedy in American with Americans speaking American! Its not a bad concept, but it fails due to some lousy execution. The channels adverts are poorly placed, and the shows just repeat so much! So, its good if youre a fan of American comedies and dont minding seeing the same shows lots, or if you want something to watch for half an hour, but anyone else will probably tire of the high level of repeats.
There are a number of shows on ABC1. Probably the most known if you like comedies is Scrubs. Its definitely one of the better shows on the channel. Basically, a group of med students, J.D (John Dorian), Turk and Elliot, get into a hospital called Sacred Heart, and discover many things about life. But its hard there, as experienced doctors Perry Cox and Bob Kelso boss them around and make their life a bit harder. Plus, theres a janitor whos got something against J.D. There have been about 5 series of Scrubs, yet somehow they cant manage to show them all. Youll usually see the newer series of Scrubs, so some may not understand whats going on. Still, if you know whats happening, youll really enjoy Scrubs. Even though you can see new episodes on E4
Another good comedy is 8 Simple Rules. Basically, this is about a generic life with teenagers. Workaholic mum Kate and sports fanatic dad Paul have to take care of three teenagers (two girls, one boy) as they grow up and get harder to take care of. Sadly, Paul dies so that means Kate has to do it alone. Kate is soon living with dead end CJ Barns as well as her Dad. When Paul is in the episodes, it can be a funny, if slightly cheesy, show. When CJ and Kates dad come into the picture, the whole point to the show is gone but is still enjoyable. Shame the repeats can ruin it, as one minute youre watching an episode with Paul, next youre watching an episode with his death and after youre watching an episode with him in it again!
One show that I used to like that is a little quiet in terms of popularity is Hope and Faith. This basically follows down-to-earth mom Hope Shanowski as she is happy with her loving husband Charlie and kids, Sydney (the teenager), Haley (the good child) and Justin (the youngster). But when Hopes celebrity sister shows up, Faith, the house is thrown into chaos as she influences Sydney to do bad things, get into ridiculous situations with her sister and more. I enjoyed the first two series of this show, as they were both funny and enjoyable. Yet, the third one was rather weak, as it wasnt as funny and felt like it was too close to the previous two. Still, all the series were good at making ridiculous situations. For example, one episode had them getting stuck in a clothes closet and then get transported on the motorway in a truck.
Less than Perfect is another good show. When red head Claude Casey starts work in an office of a huge building owned by TV Star Will Butler. She doesnt do too well at first, but when she befriends Owen Kronsky and Ramona Platt she quickly adapts and learns how to survive against insults from big shots Lydia Weston and Kipp Steadman. It creates the feeling of an office, and its funny at times too. Plus, I dont know if its me but I didnt get a sense of repeating.
There are a couple of mediocre shows here and there. Theres Home Improvement, which follows a man called Tim Taylor who is obsessed with tools (he has his own goddamn tool show!) as he tries to live with three kids and his loving wife, while loving his tools. Its not particularly funny, though there was one funny episode when Tims friend Al gets married though has second thoughts! Another mediocre show is Rodney. This follows a stand up comedian called; you guessed it, Rodney as he tries to get big while still giving his family of three a roof over their head. Its not that funny, and it repeats most thanks to a lack of episodes. There are also a couple of shows missing, like Friends or My Name is Earl. Its disappointing.
This is a problem with ABC1. The adverts are poorly placed. Heres how it works, you get an advert about three minutes into the program, which is annoying as you want to get started. Then, they placed an advert about five minutes before the end, which is annoying because the show was about to reach its climax. Its all rather jarring and annoying. There might be an advert in the middle, if theres a longer show on, but most shows are about half an hour, which means one advert at the start and one near the end.
Plus, the adverts arent too good either. They mostly repeat, as you see adverts you saw about twenty minutes earlier. Its stupid, seeing as thats off-putting. Plus, the adverts arent too helpful. Dont expect album, movie or videogame adverts here; expect a lot of car insurance, washing products and lame adverts on ABC1 shows. There are also a couple of adverts for the Disney channel programs (High School Musical 2 has been playing a lot!). Thats fine, but its annoying when they do adverts if youre watching on Freeview, as its advertising things you cant watch! The adverts on ABC1 are pretty awful. Theres one where they take the song that goes bring it back, sing it back, bring it back, sing it back to me, take moments from ABC1 shows when they say a word in the song, and then put them together so it sounds like the song. Then, if thats not bad enough, they had them say at the end back to back episodes on ABC1. ARRRGH!! Plus, after signing with them, you have to listen to that garbage everyday.
This is perhaps the worst thing about ABC1. There are so many goddamn repeats on ABC1 it could make you hate your favourite shows. Basically, they show an episode about three times throughout the day, one in the morning, one in the day and one in the afternoon, and thats not good. If thats not enough, they actually repeat episodes they have already shown during a week, so you get to see it another three times. Its just dreadful.
Also, there are some weekends where they do something like, say, Scrubs weekend where they play brand new episodes of Scrubs. Thats fine, but when they repeat it throughout the following week, thats not fine. Also, sometimes they do these stupid weekends where they just play already shown episodes back to back. They actually showed a bunch of 8 Simple Rules episodes on Saturday, only to repeat them on Sunday. Whats the point? Then they repeat the episodes the following week.
Well, ABC1 runs on both Sky and Freeview. Sky is channel 170 and Freeview is channel 15. Does it matter which one you get? Well, theres quite a big difference between the two. Sky runs the channel 24/7 and the other, well, doesnt. Basically, if youre watching ABC1 on Freeview, expect it to cut off at 6pm. Then it starts again at 6am. What do you miss out if you have Freeview? I think you miss Kevin Hill, but Ive never even heard of it. Aside from that, there are pretty much the same shows. Yep, now you can see even more repeats! So, if you have Freeview and were thinking of getting Sky just for the channel, dont.
Basically, from about 7:15 Playhouse Disney take over and play their shows until about 8:45. Expect to see Winnie the Pooh, Mickey Mouse and JoJos Circus. Its missing many shows, so kids would be better off sticking with the Playhouse Disney channel if they have Sky. Plus, the shows suffer from repeats as well. Luckily, this means that there wouldnt have been more repeats, though if you dont like kids shows like this youll have to switch to another channels. Anyways, after Playhouse Disney, the ABC1 shows are on until 7:15 the next day. Shame, maybe a couple of hours with the Disney channel may have reduced the repeats.
ABC1 is a good idea. Playing Americas best comedies, as well as some of Playhouse Disneys finest. Yet, somehow, this was completely screwed up! The repeat scale is too big, the adverts are terrible, poorly placed and ABC1s adverts are rubbish. Also, theres some shows missing, there are some mediocre shows on air and there could have been more Playhouse Disney shows, as well as shows from the Disney channel. So, only watch it if youre really bored and need something to do for a couple of hours. If you watch it 24/7, or 14/7, youll probably hate the channel forever. Better for casual viewing, not die-hard watching like bigger channels. ITV1, BBC1/2 and Channel 4, as well as many other Freeview channels, are better, much better.
Thanks for Reading. Stunt 101
ABC 1 is an American channel which you can now get on sky and freeview (channel 15). Its great for fans of American comedy programmes, like Scrubs, 8 Simple Rules and Home Improvement. If you're watching it on freeview, however, transmission ends at 6.00pm so you miss alot of the good evening shows. But if you're paying to watch it on sky, it runs pretty much 24/7.
The one problem with this channel is the fact that there are two advert breaks in every programme which can ger extremely annoying. There'll be one after the theme tune and one about 2 minutes before the end, which seems slightly pointless.
Not to mention the fact that Sheila's Wheels are now in partnership with them, so every time the adverts come on, you get a burst of that bloody song. >I
~~~~Who or What Is ABC?~~~
ABC in this instance quite simply stands for the American Broadcasting Corporation. It is a subsidiary of Walt Disney after it was acquired in the 1990's.It began life in 1944 as a radio network, and in 1948 they made their first television broadcast. In the 1950's, Warner bros and Walt Disney both produced shows for this network, and helped propel the analogue channels they broadcast on into popularity with the TV public. TV was coming into its own, and the advent of Hollywood style entertainment on the small screen drew in more and more viewers. As time passed, ABC went on to produce many shows that remain in the conscious of popular culture even today. These include international hits such as Batman (1966), Bewitched (1964), Time Tunnel (1966), Te Outer Limits (1963), Happy days (1974), Mork and Mindy (1978), The Love Boat (1977), Dynasty (1981), as well current gems such as Lost (2004) , Desperate Housewives (2004), Grey's Anatomy (2005), Boston legal (2004), and Ugly Betty (2006). In addition they host regular sports programmes such as Monday Night Football during American football season, music and dance programmes for youths weekend evenings, daytime soaps, and Saturday morning is reserved for children's cartoons.
Now, with a network line up like that, you are no doubt puzzled as to why their best shows are on other British stations when they have their own channel. I have to ask myself that question as well. Their UK broadcasting history certainly provides no clue.ABC1 was launched by Disney as a UK sister channel to the US' ABC. Initially it was exclusive to Freeview, and uuencoded. Then a few months later it was picked up by NTL's digital cable service, and a 2005, nearly a year later, it leapt to Sky. On Freeview and cable, it is unencrypted, but on Sky it is encrypted and only available as part of a package. Go figure.
Initially it limited its broadcasting hours from 6 am to 6 pm, and strangely only broadcast large blocks of repeats from its back catalogues and none of its current hits. All the shows were available to watch on other channels people were already familiar with, so not much of a draw there. After a year, they introduced some of their Playhouse Disney programmes such as Higgly Town Heroes and JoJo's Circus, which brought these shows to the non Disney subscribing audiences for the first time. In 2006, this all changed again to back to back repeats of blocks of old sitcoms as well as a 24 hour broadcast presence, with 2007 seeing repeats of back catalogue dramas again.
Why on earth they do this to themselves rather than grab a big bite of market share by keeping Lost, Desperate Housewives, Ugly Betty, and their other smash hits to themselves and broadcasting them perhaps a week or two later than their US channel (if need be), is a true mystery. Here we have a broadcaster who takes their most lucrative audience grabbing shows, sells the broadcasts rights off, and shows syndicated can be watched elsewhere repasts back to back on their own channel. Uh huh. makes sense to me. NOT.
This is a broadcaster who has great shows, but needs to put them on their own schedule, instead of the current block of multiple repeated repeats of shows in syndication already. Their attempt at a UK channel, is frankly, ill executed for the most baffling of reasons.
abc1 tv channel - channel 15 on digibox
I have had a digi box now for a good year maybe even a bit longer than that. There are still people in my area that cant have these boxes due to the fact of bad signal but i have never had any problems with mince since i bought it.
one of the best channels i found has got the be this abc1. It can be found on channel 15 on my digibox which i persume is the same for everyone elses box.
The channel is on from 6am to 6pm. This is the only draw back becuase the abc1 channel on sky i think stays on till late into the night but on the digi box the channel cuts off at six o clock.
I like this channel mainly becuase there are lots of american comedy shows shown on it. Early in the morning especially weekends there are a few childrens TV shows which i maybe persuaded to watch especially if it has winnie the pooh in which it usually does have. After this however there are various other amercian comedy programmes shown back to back.
The adverts are different to other channels as they are nearer the half hour and hour mark and not half way throught the show you are watching which i find much better. they also seem to be shorter than on other channels i watch and this of course is another bonus as no one likes bloody adverts!
The main shows which i will be found to be watching are
Scrubs - they play all the different series's and as there are so many different shows of this i have pretty much managed to see all of them now thanks to this channel (i am now always finding that they are playing one i have seen however so they may need to stop replaying them quite so much)
Hope and faith which is an amercian comedy which i had never seen before about two sisters and really is quite funny. it is basically a good gfamily comedy which is suitable for anyone in the household to watch.
Home improvement is a show that used to be on chaqnnel 4 when i was younger at around 6 in the evening. This is shown quite a lot throughtout the day and i think there is a double bill always shown at around 3 o clock time. Again as so many of these shows were made it is fairly rare that you will watch one you have seen recently - but again the more i watch this channel the higher the chances are that you will be watching a repeat.
There are some other shows such as Rodney, or Less than perfect which again are amercian comedies which i dont find as good as the previous shows i have mentioned.
I find this channel a really good optional extra and when there is nothing on any other channel i can always count that there is something on abc1 that i would be more than happy to watch.
For the fact that i pay nothing to have this channel it really is a bargain. There is always a good laught to be had whilst watching this channel and i suggest if you havent seen any of these shows head iover to this channel and take a litttle look. it is a shame however that the channel ends at 6pm as i think it would be even better if the shows continued on into the night.
