Advantages: Good channel selection
Disadvantages: Temperamental hardware.
First of all, the receiver:
I have had two of these in my home for almost 2 years, although I didn't have a choice at the time, they came with my package I guess....
As tv receivers go, they are good, I get great quality pictures and they are very easy to use - I never really touch them other than to power on/off since the remote won't stay set to DTv - it continually wants to flip back to the tv setting! I contacted Directv about this and all one has to do is remove the batteries, hold the number 1 button down for 10 seconds, reinstall the battery and hey presto, the remote is reset to DTv!! Anyway, I digress... I NEVER touch the one in my bedroom as I use the remote for everything!
Now the remote:
The remote is a little moody in that, asides from switching back to tv at random, from time to time the page up/down wont work on the guide and I have to reset again.
Overall I am pleased with this product - not so pleased with the remote.
The Service:
At first I was reluctant to stick the little dish on the roof as I had been a content customer of cable for years. However, the channel selection was far superior, although a lot of the sport shows I wanted - to allow me to see my favorite soccer team, Celtic, even though I am thousands of miles away - were unavailable unless you subscribe to the fees!!
I believe I have about 300 channels - although I would say that about 10 would suffice considering all the good shows are only on those channels, lol.
The Dish:
Now, herein lies MY problem. Great picture except when we have a hard rainstorm or lots of snow - then it freezes or goes completely blank - not good. Having stated that, in the 2 or so years I have been a subscriber, I have lost the picture maybe a total of 10 times - and often I will still have the picture in one of the other rooms!!
Not a bad choice as far as service and pretty decent as far as channel selection.
Summary: Overall, it's okay - I would condider going back to cable, but the channel selection is greater
