Advantages: Think of the money you save!

Disadvantages: Despite the hype, no signal avaiable in some areas

Wouldn’t it be nice to sit down from time to time and watch some mind-numbing trash on the TV! The problem in this part of the world is that, despite having to pay a ridiculous TV Tax to the BBC so that they can employ the sons and daughters of BBC has-beens on huge salaries to present imitation ITV programmes, we can’t receive BBC1 or 2 most of the time.

So what’s to do? How about a dish? Sorry, not here – it doesn’t work. OK – in the winter, when the leaves are on the ground, we can get a fuzzy picture of some Germans swaying from side to side holding steins full of frothing Pils, but the novelty soon wears off!

ON Digital was the obvious answer. It is cheap, has a wide range of mindless trash, and maybe even has the occasional programme worth watching.

We filled in a ream of paperwork at the shop. Then came the crunch. The woman in the shop telephoned ON Digital and after a short wait told us that we probably wouldn’t receive the service, because of where we live.

She could not tell us with any certainty. Perhaps we would get a picture, perhaps we would not. Did we want to place the order?

I asked what would happen if we ordered it and found that we could not receive the service. She told me that there would be no refund. Of course, we did not sign on the dotted line.

Sounds familiar, doesn’t it! We already pay for the BBC and can’t see it, but at least you can’t go to prison for not paying for ON Digital when it is not available in your area.

Rather than spend three quarters of an hour in a shop, filling in forms and waiting for confirmation, you can be disappointed instantly online by searching for coverage in your postcode area – log on to www.ondigital.co.uk.

It is very frustrating when the advertising, in newspapers, magazines and on TV tell us that we can watch a wealth of programmes on digital TV; we cannot watch
them. This must apply to many households in the UK, so rather than spending all that money on advertising, why can’t ON Digital spend a bit more on increasing the coverage of their service?
