First of all, let me say that what NTL actually provide, i.e. a phone line, and a limited number of TV channels is absolutely adequate. The big problem with them is their level of customer service. It is perfectly normal to wait on hold for 20 minutes to get to talk to them. You might think that that's not a problem, why would you ever need to call them? Unfortunately they get things wrong all the time, like your bill, or missing TV channels, or failing to turn up to install the service in the first case, so you always seem to on the phone to them. And once you have a problem, it seems to go in to a black hole. The person on the phone tells you that it will be fixed, but it never happens, so you have to call back again and again.

You may think that I am an isolated case, but everyone I know who has joined NTL has regretted it for exactly the same reasons. My advice is that if you want cheaper phone calls, keep your existing BT line but access a different system (e.g. cable and wireless, who are now the same company as NTL, so undoubtedly their customer service will start to suffer), and if you want to get Sky TV without a dish then try OnDigital.

If NTL miss an apointment you can ask for £10 compensation, I got £40 that way over a year1

I agree, they spend all their time marketing the product which if it worked would be fantastic. However, their customer services is quite simply a joke.

I have tried writing to NTL. When they overcharged me in April I wrote to them, knowing how useless they are on the phone. After 3 letters (I don't recally getting a response from any of them), and many phone calls later, they didn't manage to refund me the money, and the only way that I got my money back was to leave them. I am now with OnDigital. The channel selection is lousy, but they are much better to deal with.
