      Advantages

      Disadvantages

Huge range and cheaper than adesive backed gems but can be fiddly to use or apply glue

I absolutely love gems, and have a vast collection in lots of shapes, colours and sizes. I love to use them to add a bit of sparkle to my cards, scrapbook pages and paper craft projects. They make beautiful flower centres, swirls and flourishes, butterfly antennae and more. Adding sparkle, texture and interest to projects.

Gems can be brought either adhesive backed on a sheet or loose often supplied in a gem wheel or storage caddy.

The major advantage of adhesive backed gems is the ease of use simply position them on your project. However these tend to be much more expensive than loose gems where you would need to apply your own adhesive.

The Anitas Gem Wheels contain loose gems. The gem wheel has a hole in one panel and you simply turn the clear wheel to gain access to the gems you require. As the wheel is clear it is very easy to see the colours, sizes and amount contained. The gem wheel is very easy to fit into your craft bag for a crop or craft club; however do make sure you have secured the lid to prevent the wheel accidentally being moved and gems spilling everywhere as has happened to me.

Anitas do a wide range of different sizes, finishes and colour gems wheels including silver and gold which are perfect for Christmas crafting, clear, coloured, and pearl. As a craft addict I have most of these in various sizes as you can imagine! These gems wheels are widely available in craft shops and online and cost around £4. I find a wheel lasts me a very long time, even though I use gems rather a lot, as you get so many in a set so they really are good value.

To adhere to a project you would select the gem you wish to use and either apply glue to the back of the gem or to your project in the required position. I find it easier to apply a small amount of glue to my project and use a Sakura Quickie Glue pen which will then take a few minutes to fully dry.

These are a great addition to your craft stash and so much cheaper than adhesive backed gems. However they can be much fiddlier as you need to add the glue either to your gem or project. I find that tweezers help greatly. I highly recommend these they really do look stunning on projects and are excellent value with a wide range of colours, finishes and sizes to choose from.
