It was my daughter's seventh birthday and as she is such an arts and crafts lover that was the theme of the party with lots of different things for the party guests to make. Also, instead of buying cheap party bags for them to put everything in, the girls were given these fabric ones that they were then able to add their own designs to and it was a lot of fun.
I bought the bags from Yellow Moon and they came in packs of six for the cost of £4.99 which I think means that they cost about eighty pence each which I feel is very good value. They are described as Design-a-fabric shoulder purses and are made out of plain fabric calico. They are about the size of a medium sized purse and have a zip fastening which means that things can be kept securely inside. They have a pretty long shoulder strap (which looks like string)too which means that the bags can be worn over the shoulder and across the body. When you get the purses they are not that attractive to look at especially as the calico is off white. However, as they are going to be decorated their initial appearance is not important at all.
In my opinion, the bags are very well made and seem quite sturdy. The zip is well placed and the seams are big enough that you don't feel that they are likely to fall apart. It is not very big but it is big enough to hold a few pens or little note book, hair bands, jewellery and other treasures that little girls love to hoard! The actual measurements of the bag are 18cm x 12cm.
There are loads of different things that you can use to decorate these bags too. We had lots of different felt stickers including felt letters so all the bags had the girls' names on. These were all bought from Yellow Moon too. I had also bought some fabric pens from Hobbycraft and these were also very effective for the girls to be able to draw or write on the calico. Other suggestions for decorating the bags include sequins, jewels, beads and fabric paint pens. In fact you can pretty much choose anything and everything in order to decorate them and they will look fantastic.
All the girls at the party seemed to really enjoy decorating their bags and they felt much more special than a shop bought plastic party bag. Although all of the little bags started off the same they all ended up being very individual and so attractive. I really felt that I would have liked to have made one too! The recommended age for the bags is 5 years and above but I can't really see why younger ones couldn't have a go too if they wanted to.
Overall I am very impressed by the bags. They are so easy to decorate and they don't cost too much either. They could do with being ever so slightly bigger because then they could be used to carry other bits and pieces too, but this is only a minor complaint. Overall though, they are a great activity for art loving girls and made a fantastic ending to my daughter's party!
