Baker Ross Wooden 2 part eggs
Advantages: Great fun to decorate and make nice gifts
Disadvantages: Eggs are a bit of a tight fit and hard for children to open
These wooden eggs were a craft kit I bought to do with my 4 year old son earlier in the year when I was heavily pregnant and fancied doing some quieter activities with my son. I ordered them off the Yellow Moon website but they are directly available from the Baker Ross website for £4.98 for a pack of six eggs.
The wooden eggs are simply packaged and contain no real instructions for you to follow though the websites do recommend using acrylics paint or deco pens to decorate them. As we had neither of these and my son was keen to get started we used ready mixed poster paint. The poster paint gives a very matt look so the eggs don't take on a shiny effect which acrylic would give so if you want it to be shinny I would suggest using these paints. The wooden eggs themselves are nice and smooth and seem to take on the paint very well. As they are round oval shapes it was inevitable that my son too would be covered in paint as he trying to get each coated the way he wanted them to be. A child that is probably a bit older than my son would be able to balance the egg on one of their hands and get less messy but that was part of the fun for my son.
The other way we have decorated the eggs is to put small stickers and glitter on the eggs and this gives the eggs a lovely appearance that my son has been very proud of. My son has loved using his imagination and developing his hand eye skills by painting and decorating these eggs and that is one of the joys of this craft kit that children can do what they want with them.
As the eggs are in two parts part of the appeal is to decorate them to fill with Easter eggs and other goodies which was part of our plan and to give them as gifts for grandparents. Separating the eggs was a bit tricky and my son finds it very hard to do as they are such a tight fit. As I have to open them for him that has taken away from how interactive they have been for him. They are so tight that the wood actually squeaks when opening the eggs. I had been worried that this might make them more likely to split and crack but so far that hasn't been the case.
Overall these are a great little craft kit for small children around Easter time they are great to decorate and can hold several mini eggs so make a lovely gift for children to give at Easter. They only quibble I have is that they are a bit of a tight fit making it hard for my son to open.
Summary: A great little craft kit for children to paint just a bit hard to open
