Chad Valley Fairies Activity Book.
Advantages: Lots to do
Disadvantages: Crayons can be hard to get out
While standing in the queue in Argos waiting to pick up some reserved items, my children noticed these activity books. They were conveniently placed on a shelf that met their eye level. There were a number of choices available, but my daughter decided she wanted the pretty fairy one. The book is purple in colour with fairies on the front. It is made well so that it will last being used over and over again. It is an A4 size activity book, which has 76 pages in total so there are a lot of activities included. It is something that can be used over again, and the small variations of puzzles in the book seem to keep my daughter happy. There are different books available in the range, and we purchased two different one for the boys which are also fantastic. At £2.50 it is the average price of an activity book, which has enough to keep a child entertained.
This is an activity book which includes more than pictures to colour, there are dot to dots, spot the difference, mazes, and lots more. All the answers to the puzzles can be found on the last few pages, so they can be checked by little one after they have completed them. The pictures are all very girly, there is a selection of fairies, princesses, castles and lots of other magical things. This book is recommended from three years plus which I do agree with. My little girl is three and a half, and she is able to complete most of the activities by herself. There are some more difficult puzzles that she cannot do without help so I do believe it can still be challenging for children a few years older. There are word searches, and word games which would suit an older audience. Along with the other activities like spot the difference which can be fun at any age.
The great thing about this book is that the pages are bright pink. The crayons provided are perfect for showing up on the paper, and they are rather bright as otherwise the colour would get lost in the bright colour of pink. There are white, green, blue and yellow are a perfect contrast for the loud pages. My little girl has used other crayons on these books, and they do work just as well as long as they are brighter colours. On every page front and back the paper is covered with puzzles, activities and colouring pages. Although it repeats the puzzles through the book, they do change the illustrations. By swapping a spot the difference made up of crowns to flowers, it creates a little variety. I can see why this book would be attractive to any little girl. Wherever you look there are princesses, flowers dresses. All of the pictures are really pretty, and finished off with a flower or star boarder who could resist it? The colouring pages are all full with details, so this is not something that a five minute scribble will complete. I found all the different details in the pictures encouraged my daughter to take her time. She likes to colour each part a different colour just to make sure it is perfect, so although the colours are nice provided she does like to use her normal crayons for a little choice.
My little girl really did enjoy this book. She still has not completed it, even though we have had it a few months. It is not from lack of playing with it as she has spent lots of time carefully completing the puzzles, but to fill every page would take hours. There an instruction at the beginning of each page, but it is not essential to be able to read them as you can work out what needs to be done easily.
The crayons are included with the book, and to get them out of the packaging can be difficult. They are stored in a plastic cover that needs to be lifted out of the front of the book. The plastic cover can be difficult to take off at times even for me, so it is something that needs parental help. My children can put the crayons away by themselves, and it is handy to keep them in one place. The crayons are good quality, and are still fully usable.
I would definitely recommend this activity book as it is something a little different. The bright pages work very well at providing something a little different for little one, and it can be used over again. We find it perfect to use on car journeys, or just to keep my children occupied for a little while. As far as I know the Chad valley range is exclusive to Argos and these books retail at £2.99 but do try and wait until they are on offer. I think we purchased these part of a buy two get one free deal.
(The pirate's version is for sale at half price at time of writing, and I would also recommend that.)
