Advantages: Good quality pencils, Strong bright colours, Thick pre-sharpened leads, Reasonably priced
Disadvantages: None for us
My daughter loves colouring and drawing (and recently writing too). When she was younger we used to stick with crayons as they weren't as dangerous, didn't go blunt/need sharpening and were chunky. However nowadays she prefers to get creative with coloured pens and pencils. She had a 'craft box' full of rubbish quality colouring pencils - half of them with broken leads and the other half which had to be pushed down with almighty force just so you can see which colour they were! I decided to get rid of the lot and replace them, especially since my daughter now uses her craft box for important stuff such as school work and card making!
Part of our stationary revamp involved a pack of 12 Crayola Coloured Pencils which I bought from Tesco about 6 months ago. They cost about 2.00 which I think is a reasonable price. They are available in most supermarkets, stationary shops, toy stores etc. They also come in a bigger pack of 24 and 36, although the smaller pack is fine for us - there's plenty of colours and they are easy enough to take out and about (plus less to lose!). They come in an attractive yellow cardboard box, which we still keep them in.
Colours include sky blue, red orange, black, yellow, brown, pink, white, orange, red rouge, green, yellow green (light green) and violet. All of the colours are bright and strong. All of my daughters drawing and colouring needs are covered by the colours in this set. The only colour she doesn't use much is the white. Each pencil also has the name of the colour written on, in case of confusion. The tips are relatively thick and nicely pointed which are perfect for making strong lines when drawing and writing. They also allow my daughter to easily stay inside the lines when colouring in. They produce smooth colour laydown and they don't require any extra force to bring out the colours.
The pencils are about 6 inches long and quite thin, although strong (none of them have snapped or broke under the force of my daughter's hand!). They come pre-sharpened which is handy and seemed to last a while before my daughter had to begin sharpening them for herself. They are very smooth which enables my daughter to comfortably hold them and ensures they are easy enough to sharpen (the lead has only broke off a couple of times when sharpening). The pencils don't appear to have an age range, I think they would be best suited for children over 3 years (for the reasons I already listed above). There's no reason why adults couldn't use them either. My daughter has been using her pencils regularly for 6 months and they are still in great condition and very long. I expect they will be in use for a long time to come. She seems very happy with her new pencils, especially compared to her dire old ones (cheap pencils and freebie pencils from restaurants just don't compare!) and neither of us have any complaints.
Overall I am happy to recommend these good quality colouring pencils to all.
Summary: Decent colouring pencils from Crayola.
