Crayola Doodle Daisy
Disadvantages: Stops creativity
After reading through a few reviews of this, which are all of the same opinion as me, I thought I would just write a quick review as well.
It was a gift for my daughter from a well meaning relative, but I knew as soon as I opened it that it was not going to be something that she would cherish. First of all I've seen them in use and have not been impressed, and second of all, doesn't it hinder a child's creativity?
Anyway, when my daughter opened it she was quite excited and could not wait for me to insert the batteries (takes 2AAA - not supplied) and fix her head on, put her stencil hat on and her stamper boots (added extras to provide more 'fun')
You get 5 small felt tips with this toy and the idea is that you insert them into the holes in Daisy legs, turn her on and watch her draw. The packaging states there are over 100 patterns to be made, but we have struggled to get more than a squiggly mess from this long legged creature.
It is best if you use just one pen at a time, and she will draw something that resembles a flower, but with children being children, it's quite obvious that they are going to want to use all 5 pens at once! And this generally just causes havoc.
I suppose it's a bit like a modern day Spirograph, but in my opinion, not nearly as much fun. First of all because you don't actually do any drawing youself, the toy does it all for you as you sit and watch, and second of all you have no idea what sort of pattern you are going to end up with.
There is actually a dial underneath the Daisy Doodle which you turn to change the pattern, but there is no indication what pattern you are choosing, you just turn it to a different position and hope for the best and in my opinion this must be quite frustrating for a child (it is for me!)
It seems to work quite well on a very flat surface, but as soon as the paper gets a crease in it, or there is a couple of pieces of paper strewn underneath the paper you are drawing on (inevitable if a young child is involved) then she either stops spinning and the pen just draws over the same bit over and over again until you move her, or she jumps and the whole pattern is ruined.
Apart from all the 'wonderful' patterns you can create with this, her boots can also be removed and you can use them as stamping tools, each boot has a pattern underneath which you can cover with ink and stamp. My daughter tried this, without much success and gave up.
Daisy's hat also has stencil shapes in, and my daughter also tried this and was not particularly impressed. The shapes are too small to use with the felt tips provided so she just can't get the hang of it.
You do not get any paper provided with this toy, so if you don't have any and are thinking of buying it, buy some A3 paper to go with it. A4 works fine, but Daisy tends to veer off the edge, A3 has a lot more room for a scribbling ladybird.
All in all I have not been impressed with this toy, and to be honest I don't think it will be something that my daughter will have a great deal of enjoyment with, and I do feel quite guilty about this because it was a gift.
She loves to draw, paint and create masterpieces, but she does this using her own creativity, materials of her choice, and uses ideas from in her head, not by watching a plastic creature scribble all over her paper.
The pens do not look like they will last very long, but inside the pack there was a sheet of paper which allows you to order additional pens for when yours run out. I'm not sure I will be using this!!
