Crayola Mess Free Color Wonder Disney Princess
Advantages: It's fun and something a little bit different
Disadvantages: It's not excellent quality
The bag does not contain much but for the low price I wasn't expecting an awful lot. The bag contains; 1 colour wonder colouring book and 5 colour wonder pens. The colouring book contains a total of 18 pictures and the colours include; red, blue, yellow, green and orange.
The idea of the colouring book is that you can colour in the pictures, using the colour wonder pens and it will colour only in-between the lines creating neat pictures every time. The colour wonder pens have a clear nib and only draw on the special paper in the colouring book meaning that the felt tip pens won't colour or mess any other areas and will appear to be totally clear.
The pens live up to the promise of only showing on the special paper meaning that they cannot be used on plain paper but it also means that they won't create a mess in the house. I have found them relatively easy to use on the colouring book; they work like any other felt tip pen would, the only difference being that these are obviously not your average felt tip pens.
One noticeable thing about the pens, which is not an awfully bad thing but they don't appear on the paper in the same colour as they are supposed to. The red appears pink, the orange appears a beige and so on so forth. In short the colours appear a lot lighter on the paper than they are supposed to be. They are very much pastoral colours rather than primary, this does work well with the beige however as this is the perfect skin colour.
The colouring book itself is not excellent quality as it is a ring binder type style, this makes turning the pages somewhat of a nightmare. The pages themselves a relatively thin but they are decent enough to not rip or tear whilst turning them. There are 18 pages in total as the pictures are not double sided as the special paper requires two layers to make the invisible pens work on the paper.
The pictures themselves are lovely and have fantastic detail, once coloured they really do look very pretty. The pictures include Disney characters such as; Cinderella, the little mermaid and lots of other Disney princesses. The pictures are more like scenes rather than just individual images and there are many aspects of the page to colour. There are even hidden little images such as hearts, patterns and flowers, if you brush over the background of the page with the pens the little images will be shown making the page look even nicer.
Despite this not being the best thing I have ever bought, my daughter is a big fan and she took to it as soon as she opened it. Admittedly she did use crayons and other pens on it at first until I shown her that she was to use only the special colouring pens. She really likes to colour the pictures in and then show me and daddy how neat she has been on the lines even though the colour can't technically go over the lines, it just stays within the picture itself but I like to go along with her. I wouldn't want to get into a discussion that knocked her confidence because she always looks very proud of herself when she has coloured in a picture.
Despite having this colouring book for almost a year there are still several pictures left to colour in. The pictures are so detailed that my daughter never completes a full one in one sitting, that plus the fact that she doesn't colour in all of the time means that this colouring book has lasted for a rather long time. The pens have also lasted and they don't seem to be nearing to running out any time soon.
This Crayola colour wonder set is recommended for children ages 3+ which I think is the right age as younger children won't really be able to manage the detailed parts of the pictures. There are several other sets that can be bought with different themes of pictures, I don't know all of them but I know that there are toy story 3 ones and cars along with a lot more. I would highly recommend this set, its excellent value for money and has lasted my daughter a rather long time.
Summary: Highly recommended
