Advantages: fun art kit
Disadvantages: none!
Both my daughters are very keen on art and craft activities so this weekend, as a small well done present for good reports from school and nursery, I bought them both a small kit from Hobbycraft. I bought my four year bold this Cool Foam Fairytale Art Kit and she absolutely loves it. One of the reasons for choosing this for her as well though because it is virtually mess free and she does generally make a big mess if she is having to use paint or glue - neither of which you need to successful complete this kit!
The aim with this kit is to build up a pretty fairytale picture using different coloured pieces of foam. The kit comes with the background board and all the other pieces that are pre cut and just need a little easing out of the bigger sheets of foam that contain them. The background also has the picture that you are aiming for imprinted on it so you can tell exactly where all the pieces are intended to go. This is absolutely ideal for my four year old! This one shows a princess outside a castle with a dragon flying in the background!
There are some pictorial instructions with it and these are quite important as they show the order to stick things on. This is necessary as there is a certain amount of layering in the picture. For example there is a green hill to place on the picture first and if you don't do this and add it later it will end up covering up a lot of the other detail.
All the foam pieces come with a paper backing. Once you peel this off carefully you reveal the adhesive that means that you can stick the pieces directly onto the picture - hence removing the need for glue! This is actually very sticky though so you have to be carefully to place the foam exactly where you want it because once it has stuck it will be very difficult to remove. If, while you are sticking, you need to reposition a piece, you can do this very quickly, but you definitely can't go back to it later and change things around.
One of the things that I really like about this kit is that my four year old daughter can virtually do it all on her own. Some of the smaller pieces she needs help to prise from the foam sheet but apart from that she can pretty much get on on her own - which she loves! It's easy because she just needs to look at the picture that's already there and copy what she sees! It's great and also there is not any mess to worry about. The only thing that could be potentially messy is the addition of some glitter glue right at the end but I just kept an eye on her and she was fine!
This fabulous kit is available in Hobbycraft for only £3.99 which I think is excellent value. And as there are fourteen different designs in the series, I'm sure that at some point we shall get some more.
Summary: Creative fun without the mess!
