Making home made christmas decorations is something we do every year. My favourite were the salt dough tree decorations but they took several hours to bake in the oven. This year I decided to give the fimo create your own christmas decorations kit a try.
Fimo is a type of modelling clay which hardens when baked in the oven allowing you to make items which are strong enough to be hung on the tree. The kit contains four small blocks of fimo in white, yellow, red and green and the card they come packaged on opens out to give three pages of step by step instructions on how to make your own decorations.
The fimo itself is around the consistency of plasticine but softens slightly when it warms up in your hand. A craft knife would be handy to cut the shapes but as we dont have one a kitchen knife made an adequate substitute.
The first thing we made was the stocking. The pictures from the instructions showed the shapes you needed to make and how to place them all together adding a hoop to allow you to add some ribbon to hang it up later.
The candy cane was made by rolling sausage shapes of red and white fimo and twisting the stands together to give a striped effect before shaping into a cane shape. I liked the suggestion of tying the canes to a ribbon to make a string of canes to hang on the wall but we only had enough fimo to make two canes.
The christmas tree was fairly fiddly to make but looked stunning when it was finished. The leftover yellow fimo made a goldfish to hang on the tree, not very festive but my daughter insisted on making it for the cat!
The shapes were put on a baking tray and baked at 110 degrees for half an hour. I was really impressed by the results, the colours all remained vibrant and the fimo had hardened nicely leaving the models feeling sturdy but I'm sure they would break if you dropped them or handled them too roughly.
The fimo create your own xmas decorations kit cost £3.49 from Amazon and made eight decorations in total. The kids had fun making the models and were really impressed by the finished results wanting to show them off to people and they look great on the tree. A small kit like this is also an inexpensive way to see if you like fimo and it's something I'll buy again in future.
