a regular play toy for us

Having had a few mini moon dough sets that my daughter enjoyed playing with, I picked up the supermarket set from TK Maxx recently to extend her play with this strange stuff!

      The set
The set comes with three different colours of moon dough, a cash register that also mints moon dough coins, a shopping basket and some grocery item moulds.

I should try to explain up front what this moon dough is. It is a moulding dough that is dry and a little like plasticine but a lot cleaner and it will not get trodden in to the carpet. It is reusable and you can shape it in to different shapes but it helps if you have a mould like the ones provided in this set.

      In Play
The cash register is the main item but it is still small. You press moon dough in to the top and turn a handle and it makes coins which shoot out of the side and you can put them in to the till or use them to pay for the shopping. In the moulds are an American style milk carton, a pineapple and a tin can shape which are all fun to make. My daughter will play with this for ages although I make her sit in the high chair so it all stays more or less in one shape and yes it does flake off and go all over the place but the smaller bits are easier to vacuum up as they are dry and not moist like plasticine. I only let her play with one colour at a time as the dough will not stay separate once you introduce different colours.

I paid £1o for the set in TK Maxx and this was reduced to around half price.

      My thoughts
The set is good fun, but it does get a bit jammed up inside the workings of the cash register so the coins stop falling out when you mint them and I find it hard to clean out the jam so end up poking a pen inside to try and clear it. The moon dough is squashy so our clumsy two year old squashes the coins immediately and the fruit and other moulds end up crushed out of shape before she has chance to play with them. This doesn't spoil her fun though!

      Final word
I know when I get this toy out that it will definitely end with a session on the vacuum cleaner but I still like to let my daughter have some messy play time. The dough is easy to replace and buy a new set so we are seemingly building up our collection of moon dough accessories. My husband hates this stuff so I keep the collection in a shoe box hidden away and we only play with it when he's at work!
