My seven year old daughter is just beginning to get into fashion and she loves making things so it was not altogether surprising when she received the Fashion Angels Fashion Design kit for her recent birthday. It is really intended for eight years and above but she wanted to have a go and she really has been very successful. It is also one of a number of design kits in the Fashion Angels range - I can possibly see a collection coming on!
The kit contains a number of different items that will allow your young designer to create all sorts of wonderful fashionable outfit. The main item is a large card doll. There are actually four different ones to choose from contained in various packs. There are also over 40 pre-cut paper templates for trousers, skirts, coats, tops, etc and a number of swatches of brightly coloured fabric. Add to these some glitter glue, patches, sequins, ribbons, pipe cleaners, gems and glue (along with the instructions!) and you have everything that you need in order to get started.
The idea is that you create outfits that will attach to the doll (a bit like the cut out dolls that I loved as a child!) Instead of having tags that might break off though, you stick on some Velcro type underwear to the doll and then each item of clothing also has a piece of Velcro so they will stay on the doll. I have to say that I think that this is a very clever idea!
It all works together very well. Your child can choose the material that they want and then stick it to the appropriate template before cutting it out. They can then embellish the said items with all of the other items that I have already mentioned and before long you will have a doll with a totally funky wardrobe! The material is the trickiest bit to cut especially as to cut it well you do need to use reasonably sharp scissors. My daughter does need a bit of help with this but the rest of it she can manage for herself very well and really enjoys creating lots of different fun outfits. Therefore, although eight years and above seems to be quite an appropriate age for this set, many seven year olds will manage it really well and will get a lot of enjoyment from making the clothes up.
You probably don't really need the instructions that much as it is all relatively straightforward. Even so, these are pretty easy to follow being mainly pictorial. I admit that it probably was helpful to check these out before we got started.
So far this kit has provided hours of enjoyment for my daughter and with over forty items to make I'm sure it will keep her occupied for many more. She does need to be a bit careful not to use up all the materials too early though and I am trying to point out that it's probably not to cut out a small bit of fabric from the middle but from near the sides! I expect is she runs out of the fabric though, we can be a bit resourceful and find other bits and pieces to use instead so it won't matter that much.
You can buy the kits through Amazon for £7.95 (July 2010)> this seems good value as not only will they enjoy making the items they will also spend many hours playing with the doll and dressing her in all the different outfits.
