A great resource for the classroom or home

In the classroom in the school that I currently teach at, I was fortunate enough to be left this 'My Calendar' by the previous teacher who occupied the room. I was extremely pleased that it had been left as I had seen it before in previous schools and always thought it was a great tool for educational purposed within the classroom. This Fiesta Crafts My Calendar is an Interactive Wallhanging that can vary in price and there seems to be slightly different versions, although I have noticed it on the likes of amazon for around £20. Although the picture above shows the wallhanging calendar being hung from a wooden stick, my version simply has a loop to hang it by. This calendar is made of material and is full of velcro attachments that aim to allow children to keep up to date with the day, date, month, weather and season, by getting them to change and update these facts each day. In the centre of the calendar wall hanging is room for children to attach on the day, all 7 of which are on the left hand side attached by velcro which a child can detach and put in the correct place to show the day of the week. Below that is room for the date, where children can put the number of the day within the month. These numbers are below the main body of the calendar and again can be attached and detached by velcro. Rather than have all the numbers up to 31 instead children can chose from the numbers from 0 to 9 and put them together to make two digit dates. The months of the year are listed down the right hand side, and children can chose the right month, although obviously this doesn't require changing so much. At the bottom of the wall hanging, there are two more sections. One for the weather, where there is a choice of weather symbols that a child can choose from to represent the weather that day such as cloudy, sunny etc. The other section at the bottom of the wall hanging is for the placing one of the four seasons. Obviously the biggest positive feature of this calendar is that it is reusable and technically can be used for as many years as you like. I have used it year after year at school and the children love being picked to change the information on the calendar. It is also an excellent learning tool that can be used to encourage understanding of dates, seasons, months etc. The children in my class see it as a fun morning activity rather than as a learning instrument. It is a very colourful and very attractive feature in the room and not limited to usage with the classroom, as this would also make an excellent learning tool within the home. My daughter may only be a few months old, but when she is ready, I will certainly be getting her one for our home as I want her to go to school having a good understanding of the information contained on the calendar. All in all, whether you are a teacher or a parent, this is a valuable tool in teaching your child seasons, months, dates and even weather, and in a fun interactive way, that can be used again and again and not limited to only one year. IT may be expensive but when you think of the educational value you wil get out of it, I think it is worth it!
