My daughter is quite crafty, I say that slightly tongue in cheek as she is 12 years old and enjoys art as well a being sneaky. Last year as part of her Christmas presents she received a pack of Bend N' Build Sticks. The sticks were brought from that well known toy retailer Toys R Us and can also be found online, for around £5 including postage, for those of us who choose to shop from home.
The Bend N' Build sticks are produced by Galt, and for your £5 you get a brightly coloured box containing 100, 6 inch long, wax coated pieces of string and an ideas booklet. There are 5 different colours in the box, Red, Green, Yellow, Purple and Blue so you get 20 of each colour. The strings are joined together in flat bundles of 5 and look a bit like plasticine, but that is where the similarity ends.
The wax string feels very waxy, a bit like crayons. To start making models from the strings you need to peel your selected one from the bundle and then you can bend it, roll it, twist it, whatever takes your fancy really. I would describe the strings as none fuzzy pipe cleaners, whatever it is possible to make out of pipe cleaners you can make out of these. As the Bend N' Build Sticks are pieces of wax coated string it is easy to cut them to shorter lengths or you can squash strings together with your fingers to make longer pieces of string. Unlike plasticine the strings won't mash together into an unusable blob after being played with for a while.
My daughter has had a fair amount of success making the projects suggested in the ideas booklet, but that is all she has made, the sticks do not inspire her to get creative. The ideas booklet is a bit of a let down despite being thick it only has 3 projects in which are repeated over and over again in different languages, I feel it would have been better to have a few more projects as I think this would of helped my daughter create more animals/models from the sticks.
All things considered I feel that the Bend N' Build sticks do not inspire creativity, there is something a bit sterile about them, they lack the fuzziness of pipe cleaners and the messiness of plasticine so I feel I can only award them 3 out of 5 DooYoo stars.
Thank you for reading.
