Recently my little niece celebrated her fourth birthday, and since she loves all things girly, I had in mind to get something that involved jewellery. She already owns quite a lot of Melissa and Doug items so I knew these products to be of very good quality, so when I spotted that Melissa and Doug produced bead sets so children can create their own jewellery I purchased it immediately. There are several different bead sets, but I opted for the Sweet Hearts Beat set costing £5.99, which I think is a great price considering what you would pay for a couple of pieces of childrens jewellery.
This bead set comes with a beautiful box, that can be used to store bead etc long after you have started using it. It is a piece of kit that looks lovely on a little girls dressing table and certainly makes my little niece feel very grown up having her own jewellery box, as she sees it. Like all Melissa and Doug products, the box is made of great quality wood.
This set is designed for children ages 4+ and comes with the warning that it should not be given to children under the age of 36 months. With my little niece turning four, I felt this would be ideal as an age appropriate gift.
Within the box, there are over 70 beads, which I haven't counted so have to trust the information that is on the front of the packaging. Anyway, there is certainly a great amount of choice in terms of beads for a child to choose from.
Although this is promoted as a sweet heart bead set, there are obviously more plain beads than there are of the heart shaped beads. Nonetheless, all the beads are good quality and are bright, colourful and attractive, and my little niece couldn't wait to get this open and start making her very own jewellery. She had an obvious preference for the heart shaped beads, however, I was able to sit with her and make various patterns for her bracelets that involved plain and heart beads and she didn't seem to mind once she saw what could be made.
The box also comes with several different coloured string cords to thread the beads onto, and the great thing about these is that the child can resuse these cords when they want to make something new, as they can be easily undone, which is just as well, as my little niece still gets much enjoyment for making a necklace or bracelet and then half and hour later wanting to take it all apart and make another one.
All in all, for the very reasonable price of £5.99 you are getting a great set of beads that allow a little girl to work on her coordination and fine motor skills, as well as making her own colourful and decorative jewellery, with materials that can be reused as many times as they like. Coming with its own lovely wooden storage box is an additional extra!
Heart-themed beads make this set with more than 70 wooden beads a lovely activity. A variety of colours and patterns jazz up your heartfelt designs. Handy wooden storage tray with compartments, keeps the beads and colourful stringing cords neat and organized. A perfect activity for parties or rainy days!
