My seven year old daughter loves fashion and she loves making things so an ideal recent birthday present was these decorate your own wooden dolls fashion set which is made by a company called Melissa and Doug.
The set contains a number of different items which are two wooden dolls and two wooden stands, a set of coloured pencils, glitter glue and beads. They all come in an attractive pink box which has different sections to help keep everything organised - if your little girl is that way inclined!
The wooden figures are flat and two dimensional. There are pictures of girls on the front of each one but quite bizarrely, when you turn them over, there is the same picture on the back. I would have expected that there would be the back of each one on the back, particularly as they are designed to be stood up in their wooden stands. The only benefit that I can think of for both sides being the same is that, although the outfits are the same, they can be decorated with different colours and beads to make them different.
The wooden stands are very sturdy and it is good to note that the wooden figures slot into the grooves provided very easily which means that the wooden figures are able to stand up with no problem.
There are five different coloured pencils to colour the dolls in with. These work well but as the colours are a bit limited - red, pink, purple, blue and brown - you might well want to find another set with a wider range of colours to use as well. All work very well on the wood anyway. Also with the glitter glue and the beads (that have a sticky back making them easy to attach) you can make these figures look very attractive. Both dolls have long hair but one is pictured wearing a top and trousers whereas the other has a dress with a jacket. Both look quite pretty and I am sure that most girls will love embellishing their outfits.
When my daughter opened this present she was highly delighted and she could not wait to get started. If I noticed any limitations, she certainly did not and as she was the intended recipient, I don't think that I can be too critical of the lack of colours and the replication on both sides. Also, as there are two figures it means that now they have been decorated, my daughters can play with them and have lots of interaction between the two dolls. I like this because it does give longevity to what is essentially quite a basic colouring kit.
I bought this kit for my daughter from the Craft Superstore and it cost £5.99. I don't think this is too unreasonable but I don't think it would be worth paying much more than that amount for it. Overall, my daughter really likes this set so I would recommend it but only just. It might be worth looking round for similar presents that might have just a little more to them!
