My son loves anything arty so on as a special treat we went to a local craft shop. Now my son has just turned 3 so we couldn't get anything to detailed or intricate, so when we saw these Mister Maker sock puppets I thought they were ideal!!
The box was bright and colourful and had the well known face of Mister Maker on the front and at the price of £4.99 I thought I would give it a go.
When we opened the box out fell 3 socks, quite boring colours I must say, along with some googly eyes, some felt, a bag of pom poms and some glue. Oh, and an instruction leaflet with some cut out shapes.
I was quite miffed that a kit designed for very young children had bits that needed cutting out as it meant that I actually had to do the work but we carried on anyway.
Well what a waste of time the whole exercise was!!!! After cutting out the right shapes of felt, gluing and sticking, the instructions then said "leave to dry overnight". Erm...right. So a three year old now has to be told that they can't play with the sock puppets that I have just stood and made for them until tomorrow!
So I bribed him with sweets (as we always swore we wouldn't do!) and waited til the next day. The moment he put his small hand inside the puppet, you guessed it, the bits all fell off.
What a complete and utter waste of money!
My daughter is very into her crafts for such a young age, and we're always receiving crafts kits as birthday and Christmas presents.
One such present that was put away for when she was slightly older came out of the cupboard a few weeks ago and we both sat down together and completed the set.
Mister maker is a popular children's TV show during the day about quite obviously making things. Lots of glue and sticking is used within the programme, therefore I suppose it seems natural to create a set of craft kits as a spin off from the programme.
Sock puppets set are designed for children three years and over and will set you back in the region of £5-£6 from Amazon.
Inside the kit, you get three super long socks in varying shades and patterns, a selection of googly eyes, foam pieces, feathers, glue, some felt squares and instructions.
Immediately I was expecting a few more smaller craft items than we actually received, but I guess there is only so much you can stick onto a sock.
Within the instructions are also a sheet of templates that you can use to make features on the sock puppets to turn them into snakes etc. These could be reused I guess if you wanted to keep them and use on other socks, but it wouldn't take a lot of imagination to make paper templates yourself without this kit.
My daughter immediately was playing around with the socks without even thinking about sticking extras onto them to create an animal or character. Her imagination was enough without this to create her own sock creatures.
We managed to spend some time gluing feathers and cutting out shapes to stick on. The googly eyes were definitely a hit and a must with this kit.
The glue supplied was a standard pva glue that we tend to have in the house anyway. There isn't a lot supplied, but certainly enough for the three socks.
Once glued however we found that as it seeped through the sock material quite quickly, then we had to leave for ages for the sock to dry completely. This was quite frustrating for my daughter as she waited over 24 hours to be able to put her hand in the sock without it being sticky. We didn't overuse the glue either it was just the nature of the two materials mixing.
I think the kit is designed at the right age group and probably more suited to the younger child, as there isn't too much imagination or technicality needed to create these puppets. An older child would have probably whipped through the making process very quickly and gotten bored easily.
Overall I'm glad we received this as a present rather than spent money on it. Just because the name of a well known TV show is attached doesn't make something amazing as we found out.
